      ALWAYS CHANGING

      Pros

      Home health is a rewarding career for a clinician. It allows you to help patients in their own environment. However, it is one of the hardest jobs I have done in my career as a nurse. The group of professionals I work with are caring, giving and work hard to met the demands of excessive paper work, long hours, and patients that are need of expert care for chronic illnesses. Amedisys offers education and support to meet requirements needed to care for such patients.

      Cons

      Amedisys does not plan for long term solutions. They develop job positions to take care of crisis situations. It seems once the crisis is over the jobs are downsized, rearranged, or whatever terminology is needed to change things again. The clinicians I work with give 110% of themselves to these job roles. I suppose one could say "Here today. Gone tomorrow."

      Too many changes!

      Amedisys has began implementing HUGE changes over the past year. Their nurses and therapist are being asked to maintain a weekly visit rate of 25-35 patients and transmit all computerized notes, orders and Oasis within 24 hrs. This in itself is not impossible. However, we find ourselves choosing between staying up all night or waking at 5am to comply with these demands. Not to mention the fact that we are not compensated for the extra time it takes to meet their new documentation and transmittal time requirements. None of our per visit pay rates have been increased or quotas decreased to date. Therefore, I am now spending twice as much time documenting, beginning my daily visits later each day and getting home later each night....all for the same pay! A week does not go by that we are not asked to spend hours on our company "learn center" to complete mandated continuing education. I cannot speak for all Amedisys' DOO, but ours does not lower our weekly visit quota to compensate for the time required to complete mandatory training. A year ago I would have said that I loved my job and Amedisys was the best company I had ever worked for. Now, I would not recommend anyone with a life outside of work or a family apply. I truly love my DOO, clinical managers and fellow employees...but I need less stress, more sleep and time with my family. The "perks" of home health care (such as a flexible schedule) do not exist any longer at Amedisys and they certainly DO NOT outweigh the headaches!

      Long hours; late nights and/or very early mornings; 24 hr transmittal requirement for all notes, orders and Oasis; hours of mandatory company based education requirements; detailed documentation requirements that have added hours of work that is not compensated; weekly visit quota and per visit pay rate has not been adjusted, although time invested has doubled; recent high turnover in staff due to low moral; regional and corporate directors that are more concerned with impressive numbers than putting our patients first!

      I think although I am not even sure at this point that what Amedisys wants to provide to their patients who are suppose to come first is the right idea. However it is getting lost in a ridiculous web of confusion, incompetent management, too much information on the silly things & not enough on the important, unprioritized concepts thrown at you, a repetitive documentation system. It is exhausting. Moral is nonexsistent. You hear in an instant all that you do that is not up to par according to your director's own vision.
