Gossiping, Cliques and it feels a lot like high school.

Pros

There is free coffee, if you are accepted into one of the cliques you can show up late, leave early, get great reviews and take long lunches. The benefits are decent.

Cons

The company talks about diversity and inclusion and that may be something on the upper management level, but otherwise it is an environment of exclusion. Following a recent 90 minute classroom on Diversity and inclusion, several opted not to sit in the meeting because “it’s a joke” but logged into via phone. Leasing Ops is divided in many teams and within these teams Are cliques, they go out for lunch, get Starbucks, refill their water/coffee in the kitchen together, sit together in meetings and exclude 1 to 2 ppl on their teams with the excuse “well we are friends” and use it as a vehicle of exclusion. They mirror middle management who are equally cliquey and gossip about each other and their employees. This can take the form of frequent "closed door" meetings and/or walks to talk about “something important” between clique members, rumor-spreading and gossip mongering.

Pros

You don't have to work hard here. You will get promoted just by virtue of being here longer than someone else.

Cons

Recently the company had lay offs. The company claims to have cut costs elsewhere but is continuing forward with moving us to a brand new multi million dollar office at Fenton, continue to sponsor events for politicians and spending money elsewhere instead of caring about there people. Those that were laid off were told there are open positions that they could apply for, so instead of removing positions with nobody currently working them, active employees were laid off. Personally I believe this is the first of many lay offs within the department. Many within the department are now actively seeking other employment. Within the Engineering Department the Vice President used this as an opportunity to lay off anyone who had questioned him/management in the past. Some of the top engineers are gone instead of those with months of experience or any of the interns. The "culture" within the office is horrible. We have been told in the past "put your head down and work." Any attempts to improve culture are met with resistance from management, then every department meeting the VP tells us the culture is great and thriving. An engineer asked how we would improve culture once we move to the new office where nobody has a personal desk where they could have picture of their families anymore. Instead of trying to address the concerns the VP openly accosted the engineer in front of the entire department and told them not to question the new office. Overall this place is a production mill, you will get 8-10 collective hours of training at the most then its trial by fire. The only thing that matters is if you hit your production numbers, the work doesn't even have to be correct. I have personally witnessed a registered PE lower the windspeed on a project to get it to pass then say "lets hope the jurisdiction doesn't notice" so we would not have to pay to reinforce the structure. There is no opportunity for developing your engineering abilities, no matter how much you seek it out. The department is moving towards a complete automation model where the engineer never touches the analysis. The department is headed in the wrong direction and I believe over the next few years this place will be a skeleton of what it once was. Once automation is set up there is no need for more than 25% of the current staff.

Management Ideals are Outdated

Pros

There are decent benefits for today's standards. The stock program is nice in addition with yearly bonuses if you meet your established goals.

Cons

Management is completely out of touch and expects employees to sacrifice personal life to be completely focused on career. There is hardly any work/life balance. The company is afraid to allow employees to work from home because outdated management cannot handle how obsolete their positions are when they aren't watching their subordinates sitting in their chairs at their desks. It's almost as if the company doesn't trust employees to do their jobs when they aren't being watched. Witnessed insecure management be threaten by truly talented individuals and publicly degraded individuals repeatedly to the point where people quit. There are lifers at this company and then there are departments with high turn over rates because people get worn down so quickly. Departments are completely segregated and have issues communicating across team lines. The word "silo" is thrown around in yearly town halls, but nothing is ever accomplished or corrected. The company claims they want to foster a community that is like "family," however they do not listen to the survey responses they are given and continue to do things the same way. The company likes to "run lean" at the risk of employees not being able to complete tasks or live up to expectations. The work load becomes unbearable and unrealistic, and then the company spouts more rhetoric about caring for everyone.
