Most stressful job ever - BSI Scheme Manager/Product Expert - Medical Device

Pros

Recognized as the best notified body for the Medical Device Directive. Some of the most hardworking people I have met in my career are in BSI's Medical Device team. BSI also caters to the top medical device companies

Cons

- This is not like any other auditor or industry job. Think of it as a mathematics exam and picture yourself in a time crunch for such an exam that is a week long. Add dramatic and short-tempered upper management whose livelihoods depend on your work. That is your average work week - Poor salary and increases on a yearly basis - Lack of support from management when dealing with angry clients - Clients have unrealistic expectations and sales paint rosy pictures to client until you - the Scheme Manager deals with the situation. - US based employees have difficulty moving up the ladder as the upper management for Notified Body is based in the UK - Limited time spent for initial training. You will deal with angry clients from day one.The trainers don't have much time for training. You will be thrown to the wolves from the beginning. If you are US based, most of this will be while you are struggling behind a computer monitor. - BSI's model is based on service levels to clients. BSI is able to charge more for expedited requests, however, with headcount not being adequate people work 60-70h a week. - Increasingly, the work has become more procedural based rather than expertise based as the MHRA likes to make the Notified Bodies dance to their tunes - Company works like a consultancy. Every minute of your life has to be accounted for. That 15 minute break you took after a stressful review? You won't be able to add that as part of your supposed 40h work week. Every employee in the Medical Device team fills out a time sheet. Even assembly line workers have less micro-management. When working in the Medical Device team, you will never be able to switch off of work. Your phone is constantly buzzing with emails and phone calls and it is expected that you handle this even during your holidays and annual leave. - People are hard working, but not sociable. General health in the team is poor from the work. Broken relationships and addiction to alcohol is rampant. Don't expect to make life-long friends from an employment at BSI. - Poor infrastructure. Even my grandparent's bakery has better software systems. The additional time spent on working through software and systems glitch is not accounted as part of your work.

Pros

Great Co-workers and friendships that came out of that crappy place.

Cons

POOR MANAGEMENT! there is no logic to half of the things they implement, no training, FAVORITISM runs high there, completely overworked- they are always increasing your sales goals to unattainable measures. You will commute all over far, Have to work long hours after you get home.. its never ending. ungrateful company, CANNOT keep employees- revolving door, no transparency, Shady HR, ABSOLUTELY ZERO CARE FOR FAMILY OR WORK LIFE BALANCE. One of the WORST, most NEGATIVE places I have ever worked! Its like a morgue in the office. no one talks... STAY FARRRRRR AWAY FROM THIS PLACE!

Pros

Benefits, colleagues, that's really it.

Cons

Micromanagement, low pay, most anti-sales "sales" organization, ever. When starting - you will be told it will be like running your own business. Lol. Do yourself a favor and run, run while you can! You will constantly be micromanaged and asked to do a lot of reporting and administrative tasks that have nothing to do with sales. Not sure about the top management in the company, but my day does not have 48 hours. They hired some sales management training consultants that developed their "sales training and system". Let me tell you that these consultants have never seen sales, even from a train, since the idea is for the sales person to be able to perform their job and sell - but not with these clowns who try so hard to make consultative sales into some kind of sophisticated science on the borderline with a PhD level theory (no one obviously told them, there are no PhDs in Sales) - all the while bombarding you with senseless / non-sales related tasks to do. In other words, you will be asked to report, report, developed strategies, report some more, admin. tasks, don't forget to report this and that while staying in line with their "model" .....by this time you realize, there is no time to sell anything - but, oh, wait - here is more senseless stuff for you to do! It's like them asking you to tell them what you gonna do and how you gonna do it, while you can't ever actually get around to doing it! On top of it all, you will be tasked with general customer service & doing the work of other useless departments like Operations, Certificates, Training that are stretched thin and overworked. It felt surreal working there. I was always waiting for the secret camera crew to jump out and tell me I was being pranked. They have no confidence in their sales people and as such see the need to micromanage you to the bone. Only accept this job if you want to be overworked, not have time for yourself & family and be underpaid in a dead end job. Their sales targets are unreasonable, btw, as well. They are a joke.

BSI Response

BSI welcomes feedback and continues to innovate solutions to support the success of our sales organization. On an on-going basis BSI collects, through our employee engagement survey’s, your voice. We are actively empowering our stakeholders to continuously improve our organization. Like most large organizations, BSI is continuously reviewing and updating its approach to customer engagement and sales management. We continue to invest in our sales capability, competence and tools to refine and change how we interact with our customers in response to market conditions and changing customer buying patterns. The pace of change in this area has been exponential in the last few years, with buyers now far more engaged and further down their decision making than ever before. We are always striving to keep pace and equip our sales teams with the tools and environment for collective and individual success. While disappointing to hear, your comments are of great use as we seek to continuously improve the BSI experience for both our customers and our sales staff. For some time now we have had a sales council to put forward suggestion for improvement. It is a great shame that your comments and thoughts have not made it to this feedback body prior to your exit.
