Pros

Working with young, mostly healthy, pets is a nice change from the typical animal hospital. You can go from no experience to Veterinary Technician to Shift Lead to Practice Manager to Fired in very little time.

Cons

Their business model appeals to pet owners who want everything for $0. They hire inexperienced and uneducated doctors and staff and hope for the best. The staff is treated like children - they decorate the hospital like a pre-school and reward staff with candy bars when they sign up $1000's in Wellness Plan Memberships. Doctors can do no wrong. The sites' success balances on the doctors' ability/attitude yet the PM is always the scapegoat. Field and Regional Leaders talk the talk, but don't walk the walk. Company policies set by people who don't understand hospital dynamics - "Follow this new initiative (even when you know it will not work) and when it fails we will blame you." If you do work there, get used to 30 cent raises for going above and beyond. Every year I was there company made changes that benefit corporate never the associate: hired as hourly manager - changed to salary, then told to work a MINIMUM of 46 hours per week, then had bonuses taken away all while being told that you are working for a "Billion Dollar Company".

Pros

The benefits for full time employees are pretty nice. Dental and vision are excellent, but medical has a high deductible. The HSA money they give you each year is awesome. I love the three "free" but taxed wellness plans for my pets and wouldn't work there if I didn't get those. I also like that when you learn your job, you are given a lot of responsibility and trust. I also love that Banfield stands for preventive care and helping people afford these things more easily.

Cons

I have worked for Banfield as a Vet Assistant for almost three years now. I have made two minor raises each year and am still only making less than $13/hour. The pay is basically horrible for the type of work that is required of VAs. We work our butts off with very little compensation. The corporation is horrible in the fact that you are a tiny little fish in a giant sea. The corporate money makers don't care at all about the hospital workers who are doing the dirty work. Our hospital has a ton of employee/doctor turnover and it's a struggle to keep things consistent. Basically I am only working there still because I have established myself there and can pretty much get whatever shifts and time off that I want.

Pros

1. Vets & techs that really do care about animals 2. Able to change hospitals if you have to move to another state

Cons

1. Too much pressure from upper management to focus on money/average patient charge all the time. You are always getting yelled at about it and can be written up if you don't 'upsell' enough. 2. Trying to squeeze in too many pets everyday. This directly leads to rushed visits, too much stress on all the staff, owners getting upset because they have long waits, leaving late almost every night so your personal family life suffers, and most importantly poor quality of medicine because you only get time for a few mins with each pet 3. Too much staff turnover due to the stress and lack of support 4. Hospitals are only shut 2 days a year, for Xmas and Thanksgiving, so you will have to work on most holidays/weekends and are probably going to miss a lot of important family events. 5. You are expected to just smile and take verbal abuse from clients. Management cares way more about not upsetting a client, even if they are wrong or being unreasonable, than they do about you or how that drags down the staffs morale.
