Pros

• Gratis, lots of freebies throughout the year • Decent benefits, but nothing special • “Culture Club” does monthly events and other activities • Most of the employee base are very friendly people passionate about the company and truly care about each other

Cons

• “Mean Girls” meets “Devil Wears Prada” environment where it seems upper management are blatantly and unapologetically rude, short-tempered, catty, and two-faced while acting like anyone below them does not exist until they need some work done or someone to blame. • Humiliation and bullying are common management tactics, resulting in very high turnover rates; employees who leave or are fired are bad-mouthed and even blacklisted • High-level decision-making is often ego-driven rather than based on any facts, data, or evidence; any time a management idea is questioned tempers flare and management isn’t always rational. • Upper management are unable to admit mistakes and any time something goes wrong everyone is terrified because someone will be yelled at and humiliated even if it’s not their fault • There is no opportunity for management to be reviewed by their employees during annual reviews; Corporate management in general do not have training in managing people • HR is unresponsive about feedback or complaints about inappropriate management behavior, and often use information given by employees against them • Much of upper management are perceived of as lazy, arriving late and leaving early, expecting the little people to handle everything while they attend meetings • Employees are used as pawns in upper management’s frequent internal feuds • Employees who don’t fit a certain image will never be promoted no matter how good their performance; the brand ignores people of color not only in its employees but also in its product offering

Pros

Benefit is a hot brand, plain and simple. It's exciting to say you go to work every day for a company that has kept its kitsch since starting in the 1970s. The offices are beautiful, central to Bay Area transportation and tons of restaurants, shops and gyms. Benefit is creative and always ahead of the curve on beauty trends.

Cons

I was disappointed from day one by the lack of professionalism and common courtesy in the office. On my first day, my department (with exception of my manager) didn't even acknowledge my presence until there was an hour left in the workday. If you say hello to anyone, prepare for them to ignore you and not say anything back. It's an intense workplace where no one seems to enjoy themselves. Even if you put your best foot forward, work hard and attempt to get to know people in the office, that attitude will not be reciprocated back to you. I will always love the brand but I didn't leave with a great impression.

New Leadership, Same Problems

Pros

Free cosmetics; great place to work if you join departments that have strong teams where employees boost each other up but not all departments are like this; fortunate to be part of a team that values work/life balance.

Cons

Discrimination - Prod Inn promotions are given to those who play the game and are yes-men while differing opinions are looked down upon. Anyone expressing differing opinions to move the brand away from it's white-washed image are shut down and purposely not promoted. Unnecessary new hires are brought in to help promote this one-dimensional viewpoint instead of promoting women of color from within who offer alternate suggestions. This has long been a problem within this department and still remains an issue. Catty leadership. Benefit's public image is not representative of what is happening behind the scenes in this department with its fall in line mentality. Salary is not on par with other SF companies AND salaries are not fairly distributed amongst the team. If you are a favorite, there is more room to negotiate your salary. Promise to promote from within but never do and come up with empty excuses when employees have gone above and beyond to show they are capable of moving up within their team.
