Pros

Free product, convenient office location, summer fridays

Cons

The cons of working at Benefit are overwhelming. There are a number of Glassdoor posts about the negative culture here and I wish I had heeded their warnings, because working here was the worst experience in my career: 1.) Dated technology & inefficient processes; Benefit hasn't figured out working smarter > working harder, and the inefficiencies play out by making staff work late, perform tedious work, constantly fix errors which simple planning and technology could alleviate. 2.) Most desks are overworked and understaffed; turnover is high, so expect to inherit a lot of sloppy half-baked work when you come aboard. You will be expected to "figure it out" and quickly because 3.) Benefit is an extremely hierarchical organization driven by kick-the-dog politics. Besides the hierarchy of LVMH, maison, global, local; each job function is sliced into associate, mid, and senior roles. The result is that there are many ways to find yourself in a "junior" position, a popular term around the organization, frequently used as an excuse for “I’m not doing it," or for critiquing a teammate. 4.) Since turnover is extremely high, staff in senior roles are frequently unqualified. Promotions are used to cover roles that go unfilled, the end result is that more work is spread across fewer people, with fancier titles. 5.) Myth: Benefit is a good place for female empowerment due the high % of female managers. This might be true, but the caveat is that a lot of decision making appears to take place across ethnic/racial lines. If you’re not the correct race/ethnicity (ie French or the same as your manager) you will be on the outside doing “junior” work; while your boss and her friends spend the day shopping online. 6.) Unprofessional and disrespectful behavior. Rudeness and condescension are the lingua franca here, -so if that’s your preferred mode of communication, you’ve come to the right place. Conclusion: No matter how desperate you may be for a job, avoid this place.

No support or care for employees

Pros

gratis product, fun events and industry, young and creative colleagues

Cons

The company is run very poorly and employee growth, support and happiness is at the bottom of their priorities. HR is completely out of touch with reality and pushes blame back on to the employees when they raise a concern. HR has no empathy and is not nice to deal with, even in simple email exchanges. Each time I raised a concern or said I needed help, they pushed it back on me to figure out. When they laid me off it was the most impersonal and cold experience. The company structure is very old and monolithic. It takes months and months for things like team changes or hiring to get approved. Meanwhile, extra work lands on the employees still working but no additional support is provided. There is no onboarding process or introduction to the company. You are basically left to figure everything out on your own and those around you are not very welcoming. There are no growth opportunities and raises and promotions are very hard to come by.

Horrible Management

Pros

Great work/life balance and solid discount on products

Cons

I made a career change and started working at Benefit to get experience in my new field. A few months after I started, a new manager was hired and I started reporting to this person. They were quite frankly the worst manager I have ever reported to (and I have over 10 years of professional experience). They severely lacked proper management skills, never stood up for their team and never took accountability for any of their actions, not to mention a completely condescending attitude. That type of behavior does not make for a manager nor does it inspire any respect. I had already decided to leave the company but this new manager being brought on made me leave earlier than I had planned. Pretty disappointing as the rest of the team was great, hard working, and friendly.
