Great Potential, Bad Execution

Pros

There are many very talented and professional employees that truly care about doing quality work.

Cons

Saw a lot of high quality people pushed out and replaced by higher paid, less skilled people. Witnessed an exec hired because their spouse played golf and socialized with another exec. The newly hired exec then ignored, ran off or marginalized two thirds of that organization. When you treat skilled hard working employees like that, people see and look for the door. Results and quality matter much less than who you know. Another issue was watching good high performing employees with tenure get a 1-3% raise, while less experienced new hires get paid much more. It kills departments.

Disconnected Management

Pros

Worked as a remote consultant for their mortgage products -- that can be worthwhile for those who prefer to work from home, with occasional visits to client sites. Products are mediocre, but not much competition in market.

Cons

Management extremely disconnected from workforce, only had one staff meeting via phone in 9 months, never once set foot in a company office. Strategy more focused on just meeting consulting numbers, limited vision shown for developing products in new direction, little or no opportunity to move ahead when you never have any face-to-face time. Laid off because assigned client kept delaying implementation, extremely impersonal, nasty layoff via phone conference call with computer suddendly cut off shortly after, never any followup phone call or any warm interaction -- cold. Since management not that adept at knowing best how to measure product success, they spend a lot of time monitoring employees as to whether they are online via their visibility on company instant messaging. Expectations to be available hours from East to West coast time.

Pros

The organization is staffed with good, hardworking people, most of whom genuinely want to do a good job. Most employees are invested in their jobs and care about the products they support.

Cons

Slowly over the past three to four years, and then much more recently after Q2 2014, the culture has shifted more and more to one that doesn't value their employees. Staff cuts & layoffs have been rampant. Employees pick up extra duties in order to compensate for them. First & second line managers are unable to give very positive reviews to employees who deserve them because Sr. Management only allocates a small number of slots for high reviews, as they're aiming to limit the amount paid out in merit increases. To some extent this is normal at many companies, but BKFS (at least certain divisions) has taken this to an extreme. Executive communications will tout record profits and lowered costs to promote shareholder value, but internal messaging focuses on continued The company is much more focused on quarterly results than long term value, and that focus is beginning to extend outwards to clients as well as to internal investments. As a result of the above, employee morale has taken a huge hit. Many employees feel trapped, or stay because they're so invested in the products that they've worked to develop and support, without feeling that the company is equally invested in the employees who keep the ship running.
