Pros

Salaries, bonuses and benefits are above average. Excellent corporate mission statement - their corporate heart is in the right place. Forward thinking executive team that sincerely strives to create a great place to work environment.

Cons

IT continues to be plagued with incompetent leadership. Highly charged political environment where political savvy trumps performance and under-performing directors routinely eliminate over-achievers who pose a threat or dare to tell the truth.

Pros

The company really does try to do what is best for the member. We have been told we are striving to create a health plan we would want our family to belong to. Depending on the campus parking is provided and but the corporate office has no parking but is very close to public transit. They have a gym in many of the campuses and encourage healthy lifestyle but many departments do not practice work:life balance.....part of "healthy lifestyle." Company is big however small enough for an employee to make a difference. Depending on the department you are made to feel like you make a difference.

Cons

As someone else mentioned, the environment varies significantly based on the department. In fall 2013, it was announced the maximum amount of PTO that could be accrued was 240 hours and effective 4/1, if a person had more then the 240 hours, they would not accrue any more PTO until the employee was below the max. The people that had been around a long time or belonged to certain teams were really hit hard. Last year many departments were eliminated. In 2013 employees were told in March positions were going to be eliminated and they would know at the end of May or early June as to whether or not they might not have a job. Also due to high admin/labor cost they have eliminated many positions, and it appears a high percentage who have been eliminated are the staff accruing the most PTO and other benefits, very concerning for those of us who are still employed and have 10+ years. People just disappear, one day they are there the next day they are gone.

Pros

The pay and bonus structure are very good. The paid time off allotted is also quite generous. It was a very good place to work, from 2008-2010. This is a company in crisis, so there will be opportunities open.

Cons

For a health insurance company, the cost of the health plans offered as benefits was shockingly high. This company has been running in 'crisis mode' for the last several years. Everything must be done 'yesterday'. All decisions are very much based on short term thinking, with lip service being paid to overall strategy. There is no work/life balance, many people are essentially doing the jobs of two people. Management uses fear as a motivational tool. I found this to be the case in both departments that I worked in, and found similar reports from other people I spoke with across the company before I left. The company is also extremely political, more so than any company I've worked for in the last 15 years. They've lost a number of very talented people due to layoffs, re-orgs and bad management choices to accommodate the people who are on the 'in team'. Before I left, half the team that I was on told me about stress related disorders that they'd recently acquired due to over work. A recruiter from another company told me that she loves to hire Blue Shield employees cause they hire good people and then treat them like crap.
