Pros

One of the largest not for profit organizations in California, blue shield of california is truly committed to its mission: to provide quality, affordable health care to all Californians. People from the top of the organization to the bottom feel good about this mission and it shows. Employees and management are also committed to excellence in their work products and services. The company has evolved in the past few years to a true meritocracy where strong performance is rewarded. blue shield is also driving a lot of change inside and outside the company: as a pioneer in universal health coverage, as a leader in contributing tens of millions of dollars annually to provide health insurance to the under- and un-insured and to prevent domestic violence; the company has completely re-vamped its brand in the marketplace and is investing heavily in making health insurance easy to navigate; finally, blue shield has embarked on a multi-year project to completely replace it's core IT infrastructure--exciting times.

Cons

Sometimes the culture feels hierarchical. People are sometimes too nice to each other to make and implement a quick decision even when a quick decision is needed.

Pros

BSC is very good at developing their employees and identifying them for the right positions. They are a leader in the health care industry and provide a superior product to their customers. They also have an outstanding program for community service that all levels of employees can take part in.

Cons

Since the current leadership in Operations has taken over, there has been a decrease in moral. While management changes may have been necessary, they may have made the wrong choices in who let go and who they promoted. They have brought in two Directors who likes to micro-manage and play favorites. They promote their "friends" who lack the ability to manage or supervise while those who have the skills are looked over.

Pros

It's a stable company and industry, having been in business for many years. There is an element of job stability when working for this company. They also have very good, generous benefits including PTO and a pension plan.

Cons

As a non-profit, some of their salaries are not as competitive as they would be at other companies. At times, managers make decisions without getting the input or feedback of members of their team. Their departmental communication could use improvement as well -- for example, formal announcements have been made AFTER most of the people in a dept. know about it already, or managers don't follow-up with updates.
