Pros
One of the largest not for profit organizations in California, blue shield of california is truly committed to its mission: to provide quality, affordable health care to all Californians. People from the top of the organization to the bottom feel good about this mission and it shows. Employees and management are also committed to excellence in their work products and services. The company has evolved in the past few years to a true meritocracy where strong performance is rewarded. blue shield is also driving a lot of change inside and outside the company: as a pioneer in universal health coverage, as a leader in contributing tens of millions of dollars annually to provide health insurance to the under- and un-insured and to prevent domestic violence; the company has completely re-vamped its brand in the marketplace and is investing heavily in making health insurance easy to navigate; finally, blue shield has embarked on a multi-year project to completely replace it's core IT infrastructure--exciting times.
Cons
Sometimes the culture feels hierarchical. People are sometimes too nice to each other to make and implement a quick decision even when a quick decision is needed.
