Pros

The company really stands behind its employees and treats us well.

Cons

Not much to list here. Upper Management is not always good and or clear on communication at times, but they are being very proactive in fixing that.

Pros

Coworkers are genuine and seniors are incredibly helpful and pull their weight Great environment, very lax culture Lots of opportunities to move laterally/vertically

Cons

Management is always rolling out changes and at times do not provide effective transparency and communication Department infrastructure is convoluted and many big promises are brought to the table but rarely delivered High chance of burnout if you can't do spreadsheets every day

Wonderful company with wonderful people...

Pros

The best thing about this company is the people. We have some of the most passionate employees that truly know how to work hard while having a good time. The benefits are honestly pretty good when looking at a national level and top tier when looking at a job in Chico. Growth potential is truly what you make it. The company is growing rapidly and looking for top performers to drive the business towards a bigger and brighter future. I personally love the "go get it" culture but it will not appeal to everyone.

Cons

The health insurance plan could be better, but HR is making some big adjustments to address employee complaints, so I would withhold judgment until the new plan drops this summer. Communication has always been a struggle here, but the leadership team is working hard to remedy this issue and communication and transparency is leaps and bounds better than when I started with the company.

Pros

Build is an expanding company and already one of the leaders in the online home improvement retail space. They have fantastic benefits, including; flexible paid holidays, 3% 401k matching, a stock purchase program, and will be switching soon to blue cross healthcare (In my opinion the best HC provider for northern CA) Leadership understands the importance of a work-life balance. They are accomodating of doctor and dentist appointments, family obligations and personal days. The company values the mental and physical health of its employees. The company has been maturing and career pathways are being developed as the number of employees expands. Previously this wasn't as defined and in some cases, in order to advance your career, you'd have to drive your own initiatives and prove their worth. Leadership in my department (Merchandising and Marketing) is very strong. It is evident that they communicate well with one another and their employees. I feel confident that my manager has my best interests in mind and their primary focus is taking care of their team. We have, within the past year, had a new company President take over. His strategy is much different from the previous president and he is currently pushing initiatives to drive long-term growth and success.

Cons

Because of the recent switch in Leadership, there are still some miscommunications that occur between managers. The pay is good relative to jobs in Chico, yet low or mid-range compared to jobs in competing markets. Not all departments seem to be on the same page, levels of cooperation and communication vary which can be frustrating.

Fun Environment but very High School Drama

Pros

Fun work environment, lots of perks (free coffee, fresh fruit, cereal, beer on Thursdays, lots of vendor funded lunches, etc), vacation time and great benefits and great parties

Cons

Our HR team is very good at over promising things before they hire, they take forever in the process, and then under deliver with the actual jobs. This is a highschool environment, so you need to play the game and make friends if you ever want to get ahead (if there is any open positions). Not much opportunity to move ahead head, turnover rate is pretty high. There is not much communication as to what is going on in the company, lots of secrets until the news comes out in a company wide email.

Glad you enjoy the work environment and perks we offer. Sorry you felt overpromised to, it sounds like you're just getting started in the company. Most of the managers and directors are promoted from within so we are voracious internal promoters. If you feel like you're being passed over, maybe try a different department and be PERSISTENT! Moving ahead is a function of growth, so as long as you're willing to move anywhere within the company, there should be opportunities. We're solving the communication this month by developing a monthly state of the union email.

Pros

-I have amazing coworkers. We have a lot of fun working together and always have each others back. -We do work hard and build does it's best to make it an enjoyable work environment with some extracurricular activities. -Bottom line what makes me want to work for this company is the people I get to work with.

Cons

-For a billion dollar company the pay could be a little better for non-bonus / non-commission positions. -Lack of transparency and communication

From a manager

Pros

Perks - Plenty of them. Free food days, parties, and swag. Employees - For the most part, fun group of people to work with. Advancement - Plenty of jobs need to be filled and there is plenty of on the job experience. If you just graduated college or want some e-comm experience that will sharpen skills, I would say put in a couple of years and move on to better things. Don't go into management.

Cons

HR - Hiring practices are awful. Candidates, both internal and external, are often left in limbo wondering whether they did/didn't get the job. This makes it impossible for managers to set goals that align with organizational expectations and often the manager is the one who gets the short end of the stick. Not to mention it's a terrible look for perspective hires. Managers are not trusted in hiring for their teams. Communication is lacking. Training - They put all managers and potential managers through a training course, and when managers want to use the skills to improve the organization, we are told it is not within the culture. Why bother teaching managers methods if executives see no value in the methods? The class is 12 weeks long! "Big Dumb Company" - This has become the excuse why we don't do more to make our business better. It's why we don't have enough development resources, or why we're not fixing what's broken. Code Green - Or what I like to the call the "figure it out" policy. Code Green is the practice of making support employees take sales calls without training them how to talk to customers, regardless or experience or comfort. It is sold by saying it's a part of our values, but what it really is is taking away our talent's ability to do their jobs. Instead of working on tasks that benefit our customer, managers and employees alike are required to take these calls. We are told "it's just an hour a day" but due to follow up, each hour balloons into 2 hours, 3 hours, call backs, checked messages, calls to vendors, calls to brands, etc. As a result, things get backed up and the site doesn't improve to fit customer's needs. Now customers are calling about a return that just hasn't been processed, by the employee who handles returns. Or the product didn't get added because, get this, the person who could have added it is taking calls. When managers complain, they are told to "figure it out". When work piles up, we're held responsible. Executive Leadership - Our CEO lives/works offsite, our COO does as well. We've had openings for key executive roles for months and the ones we've hired didn't last long. The company doesn't look to it's management staff to replace lost executives contributing to a dead end and there is no executive development training to fill the bench. Very few control too much and as a result, executives are spread too thin to actually provide good leadership.

Real feedback. I appreciate your passion, and no, we need people with passion offering real critiques of how we can do better. I'm going to pass this on to HR. We can do a better job communicating with potential hires and letting them know where they are in the process rather than leaving them wondering. As far as the human element, you are right there as well. We need to do better training and be more compassionate. In a company our size, there will always be free riders and I think recent messaging that should have been directed at the few was mass sprayed at the whole, which wasn't fair. For that, I apologize. We value the human element as demonstrated on what you outlined as pro's, but we can do better on clearer direction on what to do when times get tough. We can do better and will...
