No upward mobility

Pros

My manager is excellent. She promote work life balance and the inclusiveness of the team. She understands that life happens and something’s are beyond our control. She encourages honest opinions and frustrations to be shared so she can do what she can to help with that. The pay is decent but does not equal the amount of work on a daily between excessive emails and 40 plus calls a day. Working remote is a plus as a single mother with very little help it allows me to get my kids on and off the bus and take them to appointments as needed. There is a lot of internal support in the form of share point.

Cons

Now to the bad. There seems to be very little upward mobility for long time employees. There are a lot of recent changes occurring with the merging of Ferguson and not all of it is good. The showroom employees are not on the same page as we are on how certain returns work and that causes a lot of confusion and discord with the customers which those of us on the phones have to deal with. There is plenty of lateral movement but that would require having to go to a whole new manager and start over learning their way of doing things. The same expectations are not across the board in all departments as far as responding in a timely manor to direct messages or even responding at all. CE is the low man on the totem pole and made to feel that way with the daily operations and not given the same respect as others in the company. The shift bid process is arcane and should be based off of seniority not KPI. All of the calls do not require “qualifying”. We have to deal with a lot of rude entitled customers when telling them no to something just to pass them over to OOTP and they get their way anyway 9 out of 10 times. And most importantly they changed over the phone system and Genesys is awful. Multiple dropped calls daily and zero visibility for our daily adherence to make sure we are on track to stay within our 85% required schedule. I am very good at my job I used to enjoy being able to fix the complex issues I come in contact with daily and now it follows me to bed worrying what’s coming next.

Pros

Build is an expanding company and already one of the leaders in the online home improvement retail space. They have fantastic benefits, including; flexible paid holidays, 3% 401k matching, a stock purchase program, and will be switching soon to blue cross healthcare (In my opinion the best HC provider for northern CA) Leadership understands the importance of a work-life balance. They are accomodating of doctor and dentist appointments, family obligations and personal days. The company values the mental and physical health of its employees. The company has been maturing and career pathways are being developed as the number of employees expands. Previously this wasn't as defined and in some cases, in order to advance your career, you'd have to drive your own initiatives and prove their worth. Leadership in my department (Merchandising and Marketing) is very strong. It is evident that they communicate well with one another and their employees. I feel confident that my manager has my best interests in mind and their primary focus is taking care of their team. We have, within the past year, had a new company President take over. His strategy is much different from the previous president and he is currently pushing initiatives to drive long-term growth and success.

Cons

Because of the recent switch in Leadership, there are still some miscommunications that occur between managers. The pay is good relative to jobs in Chico, yet low or mid-range compared to jobs in competing markets. Not all departments seem to be on the same page, levels of cooperation and communication vary which can be frustrating.

Pros

Being able to work from home. (which is now being taken away if you live near chico or newport news)

Cons

-.02% OF THE MARGIN comission meaning you would need to sell 750,000 at 50% margin in order to make a livable wage. Also only paid once a month on comissions. They forget all the time to reconcile orders and you dont get paid until that is fixed, but nobody else does this for you. Thousands of employees have most defnitely not been paid after they quit this job becuase they didnt know to check. This should be a class action lawsuit. -When I say Zero opportunity for advancement I mean it. Management is completely out of touch about the calls we take all day long, mostly all post sale customers who dont want to hold on the phone so they press the presale button to get us, who then waste our time all day long handling post sale garbage. -Marketing team pays big bucks for our number to be the first number that pops up on google, so people call in complaining about thier brand x,y,z right out of the gate and dont understand we are a different company not the manufacturer. -You have to submit a 75 page bid "request" for your schedule every 3 months that you have no control over or know what it will be. -They nitpick on QA scores and force you to talk to customers "thier way" and if you dont they dont care if you sell or not, you missed QA points so you are considered worthless. They cater more to Fergusons idea of an interaction than thier own customer base. -40-50 calls per day non stop and you have to maintain what is called adherence(which are multiple different blocks of you schedule they want you to follow every day) which if you are out more than 1.5 hours for any reason including bathroom breaks, following up with customers or just a mental health moment you are scolded and reprimanded and in many cases written up. -Inside sales only gets 1 hour of followup maximum per day which sounds like a lot but you have no time from the moment you log on to followup with any emails or phone calls the day prior, so issues tend to compound each day. -Zero HR presense. Nobody to talk to and advocate for you. You are just a number expected to draw water out of a rock and pressure customers just for a good QA score even if post sale. -Own brands they force you to sell they take the bonus away if your % isnt high enough, even though you could have thousands of dollars over goal in total volume or even doubled what quota you had for the month, they WILL not pay you a bonus if you percentage isnt a certain amount to your own RECONCILED sales which you cant control when they decide to reconcile anything. Someone could have 1,000 in reconciled sales and get the top tier bonus even if you tripled or 10x that ammount so long as thier % was higher than yours. -Management is completely delusional about what phone calls actually come in. I was told in a group team meeting from one of the top managers that "every customer is a pre-sale" Knowing full well we HAVE to hand off owned accounts/customers/pros. Also We must hand customers back to original salespeople on returns or you will lose the sale if you try to sell them something. -zero hope for future to change for better.

Pros

-Good People, even in management. -Stong pay (for Chico)

Cons

-The fun culture is on its way out with the growth. As to be expected but worth mentioning. -You don't go to work for good people, IMO. -Lack of honesty as information trickles down. Multiple times different managers had given entirely different direction and rule set. -It is a great place to work but not for everyone. -Ask anyone you might know to get the best idea of how bad these can get^

Pros

My direct manager has been absolutely amazing at supporting me in my role, communicating clearly, and helping me to achieve my professional goals. The Marketing Department as a whole is a dynamic atmosphere that's constantly changing which makes it a fun, fast paced place to work. My team makes me feel valued and eager to come into work. Build has gone above and beyond to support all of their associates during this pandemic. I am beyond proud to work for a company that puts my health and the health of my family first. I also find it extremely easy to communicate with our Executives. They're all very approachable and a lot of them have started from the ground up with their positions.

Cons

If you expect to do the same job every single day without shifting gears, this isn't the company or department for you. Build does not encourage a stagnant work ethic or a lack of accountability. I've been with the company for over 3 years now, and with the Marketing team for a little over a year. The only time I've ever seen someone get fired, it was a direct result of their lack of work ethic or accountability.

Pros

Good coworkers that are always here to help out when bossman is not.

Cons

Account managers are looking for other jobs because we have no hope in how are bosses are running the group into the ground. The person in charge of the group is an idiot sales people don't want to work for him any longer. Team boss hates the guy also. Dont work here please or you will take calls for ever. Hey Houz got a job?

Pros

We actually have it pretty good at Build.com. People just don't understand we are no longer in start up mode and that we are competing with the big dogs now. Everyone wants to hold onto what Build "use to be" under an immature leader. Leadership has been fairly transparent, at least my manager has been that as a business we are short of where we need to be. Why would a company reward its employees for being in the red? Plain and simple you want fun, you want perks, you want to be rewarded for doing a good job, then do a good job. Let's stop complaining and start selling!

Cons

Some managers have a clue, others do not
