I want to begin by saying that not everything was absolutely horrible at Built. The company had a great vision, a great product, and a great team. Back in 2020 and 2021, Built had amazing revenue years. The leadership was so strong, there was alignment on vision, and the company had not acquired companies or spread themselves too thin with product dev. Chase was more connected to the bottom level of employees as well, and the company culture was great. I was so excited to wake up to go to work despite the high expectations of working for a startup. All that begin to change once one revenue leaders was demoted, and a new one was hired. Immediately the culture changed. There were even higher expectations, employees started being required to come back in office and fly for their cities to headquarters in Nashville, and all that lead to high spending of our funding. Once that leader didnt work out and a new was hired, once again the culture shifted, the stakes got higher, and the expectations completely unattainable. I saw employees who were once so excited to come to work, stop coming into the office. Morale started getting low, and leadership alignment continued to get worse. Then again, a revenue leaders was fired, replaced and the cycle begin again. Now that we got bad company culture out of the way we can talk about the myrad of other things. 1. Compensation: Compensation at built was great a few years ago, but as revnue continued to decline so did the rise of salaries, promotions, and raises. Most tech companies pay their AEs over 100k. Built pays their Ae's 80k + the commission structure is no longer incentivized to go over quota (which no one attains by the way) and OTE is not legit. 2. Diversity: There was little diversity to start with at built in terms of # of women, people of color, etc. After the layoffs, there is even less diversity. As a person of color, It never felt inclusive or safe. 3. Safety: In terms of mental safety this company is a hazard. A leader once said that he wanted to get uncomfy metal chairs so "employees would know who is boss, and shake when they saw him". Everyone is scared of losing their job or giving feedback because of the repercussions, and the fear based culture has made everyone incredibly stressed. As for safety in terms of women, there have been employees who have had to be laid off because of inappropriate behavior towards female colleagues, and the victims all had to leave the company because of the constant gossip, poor treatment, and exclusion.

Where to start? This company is rotten from the top down. Senior Leadership are wildly incompetent, have no long term strategy and typically last less than a year in their roles before being fired or quitting. The definition of a boys club, where egos are enormous and organization is non existent. The SVPs of revenue are hopelessly incompetent and have created a sales culture where sales is expected to Jam faulty products down their clients throats. Planning is so poor that an entire team of sales people here in Nashville were recently laid off, because the product they were hired to sell missed its launch date by months. Any type of feedback is met with hostility and everyone is afraid of losing their jobs, so nothing ever changes. Sales comp plans change by the quarter and are in the process of changing yet again. DEI claims are laughable and at best dishonest marketing. Product across the board is crumbling and clients are deeply unhappy. Constant prioritization of short term, quarterly goals over long term growth. No amount of money in the world worth working for this company. It's a shame because they had potential. Near term business outlook is awful, targets WILL be missed by a huge margin this year.
