Pros

Every AB is equipped with a work iPhone, iPad, and credit card that reimburses company travel expenses, comp shopping, etc.; there is an annual sample sale where you can buy sample product for very cheap (all money goes to their charity); Starbucks and good cafeteria in office; beautiful building. Eventually, after training, your buyer will assign you with a class of merchandise that you will own, negotiate, and buy for the company, in preparation for becoming an Associate Buyer. The CEO and a lot of the board members are a lot of fun, very nice, and the company provides many opportunities for newcomers to receive invaluable advice from them, one-on-one. My DMM was extremely supportive and always eager to give advice and life guidance for either personal, or work-related topics.

Cons

You constantly feel like you are walking on eggshells and the next verbal or psychosocial attack is coming at any moment. Company turnover is high. Work/life balance is nearly nonexistent between the days you travel to NYC and the expectations of office days; 60 hours a week was expected, on top of checking emails at the last possible second, in case your buyer or vendor suddenly changed their mind about where to meet. Buyers can be emotionally and mentally abusive toward their assistants and their allocation team, releasing inappropriate explosive outbursts, giving contradictory instructions, contradictory performance feedback, and holding them to impossible expectations. The stress of working as an AB can be extremely taxing and often sickening. Often feels like a catty environment, it makes you wonder what is said behind your back. HR will eagerly meet with you to discuss issues, but rarely do anything to help you improve the situation; it almost seems like they want to pretend the issue does not exist if the employee whose professional character is in question is a profitable asset for the company.

Burlington Stores Response

Thank you for your very thorough review. We are glad to see that many parts of your experience were positive and in line with Our Burlington philosophy and company core values. We are concerned with some of the other feedback you provided about interaction with your management team. We are committed to creating an open, safe, friendly and healthy work environment for each and every one of our associates. While we do realize the Assistant Buyer role is very demanding and requires commitment and dedication, the health and well-being of our associates is always our primary concern. If ever an associate is feeling mentally or emotionally abused we encourage them to seek out their HR Business Partner immediately to discuss the situation, so we can thoroughly investigate and resolve any issues that may exist. We commit to thoroughly looking into the concerns you mentioned so we can make any changes necessary in order to bring Our Burlington philosophy and company core values to life for all our associates.

Pros

*they work with you if you have multiple jobs or go to school *they make sure that you know how to do your job well

Cons

*they hire anyone, so some people get away with things that they shouldn't *the company doesn't ask why there's a high turnover rate *the company over-works you if you don't have enough staff *they blame the low staff scheduling per day on the computer, even though they have the ability to make up the schedule so sometimes you only have one person per shift

Pros

The only pro is that you get paid weekly and because they don't have reliable staff, if you're committed you can get a lot of hours.

Cons

I worked there for about 3 months and just about everyday there was a new hire, mostly teenagers who were always late and did not want to work. The day I went to interview they hired me on the spot and I ended up working a full 8 hour shift. My training was left up to another cashier who was not happy about it. That same cashier ending up being fired along with two others who stole about $40,000 worth of merchandise. The managers are not helpful at all and they don't have many reliable employees. Many times I would work the check out area alone for the first two hours of the store being open and servicing about 20 people with no help from management. And if they did help they would check out 1 or 2 people and then leave claiming that they were trying to find somebody to come in and help. The store is always a mess as the customers who shop there allow there kids to run around unsupervised and they leave items all over the store. Overall, the amount of work they expect you to do is not enough for the what they are paying and management is unhelpful.
