Good Old Boys Club

Business Outlook

Pros

Casual dress code, expense working lunches, competitive benefits

Cons

The culture is good old boys club. Not a diverse workforce, lack of respect for female employees. Aggressive verbiage in meetings including swearing by C-suite leaders was normal and expected. At the time working remotely, was said to be an option, but in reality it was frowned upon and you'd be questioned if you weren't in the office, which was difficult because the office was overcrowded. Finding a parking space and/or a meeting room could be near impossible at time. Having any focused time to complete work was difficult because of an open work environment and little to no space between desks - not even cube walls. They burn through employees quickly - turnover was very high.

Egos and Ignorance

Pros

Good Pay if you ask for it. Good amount of PTO.

Cons

Management is ignorant of the solutions their teams manage. Everything is delegated, and management just expects you to work endless hours to accomplish ever more ridiculous goals. No matter how much OT you put it you will nagged endlessly about why everything wasn't done yesterday. Don't believe the recruiters, there is very little flexibility with working from home. They rarely promote from within, so new managers become nothing more than a fresh roadblock. You will be expected to give an opinion even when you don't have one, but your opinion will be ignored anyway. Absolutely no respect between departments; everyone thinks they know everything. Managers never miss an opportunity to go to "training" which consists of all expense paid vacations, and endless jokes about how they didn't understand any of the training. Training and certifications aren't encouraged at all. Career development is a foreign concept here. The office environment is "open air" which means you will never be able to concentrate, but are expected to become an expert overnight on whatever new, redundant solution they decide to buy. When the company perceives financial trouble they will steal your benefits before any other options are explored. They don't promote from within; they find ways to sneak around the hiring process so they don't have to give current employees a chance. They are also very committed to outsourcing. Basically, this is a paycheck until a better opportunity comes along.

Pros

There are a million places to get lunch in the West Loop.

Cons

Promotions/advancement are completely based on arbitrary criteria. There is no path to advancement, it is based entirely on chance, what accounts you're on, who you know, and who likes you. HR is only there to maintain the bottom line and provides no employee support. Pay is on the low end for the industry and there is no clarity of standard pay rates for positions. There is also a max on raises, even with promotions. Very high turnover of tenured employees.
