Pros

Excellent pay, adequate benefits. Smart, engaged, helpful/friendly colleagues First-class technology and solid GTM plan Huge growth potential as a company, but not so much for individual contributors

Cons

Unsustainable routine of 65-hour+ workweeks, particularly for everyone outside of engineering/technical roles Ongoing pressure starting June 2020 for everyone to return to the office After the pandemic ends, C3.ai will resume its previous policy that absolutely forbids any work from home under any circumstances Time-tracking rules require onerous daily and weekly reports Top-down management -- EVERYTHING requires Tom Siebel's sign-off -- means a high percentage of deliverables grow stale awaiting approval Wasted effort creates demoralizing work environment Indifference about employee morale fuels that negative cycle The company is poised to grow rapidly, but Tom Siebel and the very few execs he's willing to delegate some control to cannot scale that control to match the potential trajectory

Pros

- ICs come from top schools (CEO loves flaunting prestige) - Colleagues are smart & hard working, and most have good intentions - People frequent develop strong professional relationships through severely traumatic experiences (see: extremely aggressive deadlines set by non-technical leaders, surprise mandates for your weekends, general cross-team dysfunction) - The best lunch experience you can find at a tech company, seriously. But no dinner is offered. - You will climb the ladder fast if you excel at: getting buddy-buddy with upper leadership, following orders without objection, mastering the art of selling anything

Cons

- Software rarely works as expected. Core product is overly ambitious in scope given the small company size. New initiatives are expedited with blood and sweat, only to be abandoned months later due to lack of traction. Most software is kept afloat by hacky workarounds and late-night hotfixes. - Extreme skew in political power. We have the definition of a rigid hierarchy. Don't shake the boat, and do as you are told. The company is quite mature at 15 years old, so the culture has long been cemented and soured by now. This is the most soul-crushing reality of them all: you can not help those around you break their cycle of abuse, you can only watch. - At times it appears as if C3 was founded as a dollhouse for a billionaire to entertain himself with, as his prior company rapidly faded into obscurity. It's inception could be likened to Quibi's, where a self-assured elite with lofty ambitions undertakes a gargantuan project without worry for product-market fit.

Pros

* Some interesting technical problems to solve. * Rewards for learning incl. UIUC masters program and incentive program for taking Coursera classes (although this has been cut back since the beginning of the COVID pandemic) * Nice RWC office campus (location, gym, etc.)

Cons

Overall, a strong culture of fear. The culture and company practices promote individual, rather than team, achievement, motivating selfish choices and combative relationships between coworkers. Public shaming is common practice, and team leadership turns a blind eye to disrespectful behavior between colleagues. Some specific points: * The CEO micromanages everything from office lunch menus to required daily status reports on every team throughout COVID WFH. Employees must conform to his priorities and opinions or face retribution. * The CEO is also disrespectful towards other companies and other people in both public interviews and internal discussions, including when those other people are employees of his company. Productivity is valued over employee wellbeing - employees are treated as disposable. * Work/life balance is explicitly discouraged, and the CEO has even said in company all hands that he doesn't want to hire employees who care about work/life balance. If that wasn't enough, he went on to say (as illustrative examples) that he doesn't want to recruit people who are too focused on being parents or being involved in their church communities. * The bottom ~5-10% of performers on a given team (determined by subjective manager feedback and some vaguely defined code output metrics) are fired every performance cycle. * No regular raises or promotion process * No 401k matching Regarding COVID response: * WFH started being allowed later than most tech companies, and by the beginning of June, employees were told to be back in the office starting in mid-June with in-person work mandatory by the beginning of July. When that plan was unfeasible because of local mandates, the timetable was pushed back 2 weeks at a time, with very little lead time for each pushback. Leadership even went so far as to argue that the (entirely software-based) company was an essential business so that we might go back into the office before the general population was doing so. * Some people have been working in the office since mid-June; temperature checks are not enforced, masks are not generally worn, and the back-to-back rows of desks have not been reconfigured to support social distancing. * While working from home, every employee is required to give daily status updates to be shuffled up the reporting chain to the CEO. To me, this process communicated a lack of trust and created a feeling of being surveilled for the slightest lack of productivity.
