Why work in a Casino at all?

Pros

None to speak of, none

Cons

Casinos used to be a great place to work. Not anymore. Pay and benefits are so far behind mainstream to be almost medieval. No vacation accrued for the first 6 months of employment, have to wait 90 days for sub-standard insurance, you can make more money working for a warehouse than this joint. Long term people being management simply because they've outlasted everyone else, bad formula for developing leaders.

Spending Money in All the Wrong Places

Pros

Ever since the Caranos took control of the property I work at, it is hard to say if there are any positives. My paychecks clear and there are many opportunities for overtime...

Cons

...because the department I work in can barely keep staff. Ever since ERI and the Caranos came in, staffing levels have been bleeding profusely. I've worked for this property for a relatively long time. First summer, was not bad at all. I had great days off and rarely worked 6 day weeks, and was excited to go to work. The second and third summers, 6 day weeks for most of the summers, I got tired, angry, and apathetic about the job. Why? The Caranos announced they were taking over casting huge waves of uncertainty. Ever since they took over, things have gotten worse. They discontinued the newsletters designed to keep employees informed, communication about changes is nonexistent. The food in the employee dining room has become repetitive and unsafe. While I have gotten physically disgusted and sometimes queasy over eating the food, I am the lucky one. Many employees have gotten seriously ill and had to miss work over food they have eaten at the EDR. Ironic considering how much of Eldorado's success is credited to good food. There is only one thing I'll still happily eat in there when I use to enjoy everything they had to offer. Also, they replaced a generous pay raise system in my department with a rank based system straight out of Enron. For doing an "outstanding" job, using their terms, I was awarded a 1% pay raise, which is, in reality, a 1% cut due to inflation. Turnover is higher than its ever been, you know things are bad when long time employees are leaving, depleted of their loyalty. This has caused for longer shifts, more shifts per week, and burned out employees. I lay this all at the feet of the Caranos, they are so aggressive in terms of physical expansion that they refuse to promote loyalty and unity within the company and leave their managers clueless about company developments. This in turn leads to bad relations managers have with their front of the house staff. This leads to a toxic environment only getting worse because those who stay only get more and more burned out and resentful.

Pros

Remote/Hybrid work options are available to some employees. The health insurance options for corporate team members is great.

Cons

Pay falls well below the regional and national averages for nearly all roles. Teams are undersized & overworked. Pay-for-performance raises fail to stay even close to inflation. Expect to hear reports of record profits quarterly before getting a 2-3% raise.
