No career here, just a job!

Pros

Immense technical caliber among individual contributors; Great camaraderie and willingness to go the extra mile; Good health benefits

Cons

Virtually no automation of core business processes IT, Talent and Culture are starved of resources and innovative thinking and provide poor support to other business functions Too many layers of senior leadership with big dreams brought in from multi-billion dollar companies but with... - no budget to build the empire the CEO theorizes about - no deep knowledge of the access business - no influence or imagination to effect change - no real vision to scale ... but with lots of authority to fire individuals who disagree and attaboy the "yes men", who are willing to selflessly "take one for the team" Don't expect to build a career out of your accomplishments at Calix. In fact, the job description you interviewed for may only remotely resemble what you end up doing.

No longer a good company

Pros

The only pro is that some really talented people in the trenches still get a paycheck. And I hate to say it but for a company that has never really been profitable and is currently losing money, the pay and benefits are pretty good.

Cons

Where to start... CEO seems to be on a different planet. If you listen to him speak it is almost inspirational but actually has nothing to do with the products or culture that actually exist. Executive management is horrible and for a company with a market cap of less than 400M there are a ton of them. R&D leadership values yes men (a positive attitude?) over talent. Productivity vs r&d dollars spent is terrible. The marketing SVP seems to think that capex decisions at service providers are made based on Tweets as opposed to their lab trials. And everybody seems to think that chasing Verizon, who is notorious for squeezing their vendors to death, is worth losing money for 4 consecutive quarters (or more). The only upside is the VPs will get to say they brought Calix a tier 1 on their resumes when they move on to the next "opportunity". Honestly, I think if you were to drill down into any of the positive reviews it would be from people in support organizations who don't really know the the products or even the customers and just believe the sound bites.

A once good company going down in flames

Pros

- Dog-friendly office - Occasional work from home - Great coworkers - Office perks - Good health care coverage - Break room provides endless coffee and drinks, fruit once a week. Now providing donuts and bagels some Fridays.

Cons

- No raises in 2 years - Sporadic, tiny bonuses - No job security--they're cutting valuable staff left and right with no plan for replacements or workload sensitivity. - No work/life balance. Meetings could be as early as 7am and as late as 9pm. New venture partnership with India company makes meetings during valuable family time a regular occurrence, and heavily east coast upper management means early meetings for those on the east coast. - Weekend work is expected. - Marketing and sales promise the world, but there is little support for actually getting the promised deliveries to the customer. - They will work you to death and then ask that you work even harder.
