Pros

Great company culture. I have done tech support for AOL, T-Mobile, and Verizon. In regards to the actual job Canon is the best place I have worked for. During non busy times it's a very relaxed job and you usually only have to create cases for newer products which means you aren't typing away on every call. The wireless headsets allow you to get up and walk around and are even encouraged to for exercise. The desks are big and rarely do you have to worry about it being a loud environment. Management really cares for their employees and wants you to succeed. Also the center is only 2 years old and as it grows there will be good job opportunities.

Cons

Compared to previous tech support positions this one pays the least amount. I feel we are very underpaid and if the job started $1.50 to $2.00 more an hour I would enjoy it a lot more. On top of that I was a top performer last year and my pay raise was pretty pathetic. I hear a lot of the tenured reps repeatedly say "Canon doesn't pay well". Also since I started 2 years ago there has been nothing but problems. Every time we have training for a new product there is a technical difficulty (no working wifi) and the training can't be complete resulting in being incompetent when it comes to assisting the customer. Also once they messed on my paycheck and I didn't get reimbursed for a month. A lot of little problems have added up to one bad experience. I do realize that these were my experiences and I don't believe everyone working there shares the same sentiment.

Pros

- Good healthcare - Profit sharing - 401k - stable hours without a ton of overtime - Management was fair and generally understanding when I had issues

Cons

- Healthcare is a good chunk of your paycheck. It's good, but the base pay doesn't really match what they offer you. I feel that it's because they will take every measure to ensure you stay as productive as humanly possible, so naturally some of the benefits are going to reflect that. When all is said and done, after these benefits you aren't left with a lot for yourself. - Customers are varied and that can be both perfectly delightful and also absolutely horrifying (you don't care about the good ones because of how bad the bad ones can be). You see (or rather, hear) some of the strangest things on the other end of the line, and either way you are expected to roll with it. More recently they've tried to curtail the accessibility to reduce sheer volume of callers, but generally speaking it did not have an effect on the ground level where I was at. - Oppressively bright work environment. There are literally more fluorescent lights turned on than I have ever seen, and growing up in Albuquerque there were TONS of these in my schools and every building I entered just about, but this building takes lighting to an extreme. It is done in part to make people uncomfortably productive. - Very few office amenities. Not that an office is supposed to have amenities or anything, but this office had the barest minimum and still managed to budget cut down. I recall actually tearing up over losing the personal trainer because I knew it meant that I would enjoy the work environment significantly less. - Tools and software are developed in house... and they're not great by any means. The knowledge that we have of the products we're supporting is not in any way helpful, and there are hardware failures on some of these printers that are seemingly unknowable by the tech support reps. Frequently I would tell people that, after 2 years, their printers are failing and that the old ink that they had is obsolete and we use newer, slightly improved versions of what you have and we can offer you.... a discount on a new printer. That's it. It's a vicious cycle and I personally feel that it's a weird ecosystem designed to extract money, because inkjet printers aren't profitable otherwise (nor is tech support for those printers). The issues that we actually can fix are so limited in scope it feels like the entire purpose of the work is to help an aging population understand the cutting edge technology that is WiFi, and to overcome the insurmountable challenge of connecting their Canon printer to their WiFi... it's abysmally unfulfilling work. - Nonexistent upward mobility. Unless you will painstakingly follow every procedure and have stellar stats, completely nail every interview, and cause zero problems for the management, you simply will not be promoted in any sense of the word. The issue is that the higher tier positions, while highly sought after, aren't adequately paid for what position they hold. They have significantly more tools and knowledge available to them but also handle everything that the base level techs do. There simply are not enough opportunities to go around and the vast majority of the workforce is supporting inkjet printers in the way that I did.

Pros

The benefits are great, convenient location to commute too. Nice to get discounts on certain things and at certain places. Also a nice points system where you can redeem points for gift cards, that is very nice. Small bistro inside cafeteria, where you can get a hot meal. Which is great if you happen to forget your lunch at home. Wireless headsets and dual screen monitors which help a lot to do the job.

Cons

It's a call center, so you have to deal with the downsides of a call center (low pay, always on the phone, short breaks, call metrics, constant call monitoring, etc.). Pay is not that great, it could be better, but given this is a call center and a high military area it works out for them (Canon) because there will always be warm bodies to fill the seats. Extremely hard to be promoted, especially within your first year there. Short breaks, you pretty much have to scarf your food down. Not much time off the phone. Metrics can be daunting; example you can help a customer with their issue, the customer can be completely satisfied and say they will be a Canon customer for life, but if you didn't collect their information or close the call right, its a "bad call" and you will get dinged for it. Mandatory overtime. Upper management seems out of touch with what's actually happening on the front lines. Some of the policies in place or the decisions that are pass down from upper management just doesn't make sense.
