Pros

Pay is better than most private or charter schools in the Las Vegas area.

Cons

The bureaucracy of a huge district like this one causes issues. There are some great administrators out there, but they are far and few between. Most teachers in the district can tell horror stories about admin who make them question their career choices. At the district level, they don't respect or value their teachers or they would train and monitor better what happens at the school level to increase teacher attrition rates.

Pros

Great opportunity to work with a diverse population of families. You will also become extremely proficient at learning how to be flexible with your teaching methods because there is so much change that occurs through new program implementation. A lot of opportunities to transfer to different schools or get into admin (if that's what you want to do) because of the high transiency rate.

Cons

Every year there has been issues with budget shortfalls and freezing employee salaries. The CCEA (association, not a union) usually bargains to get teachers the salaries they were promised. Many teachers would start the year off with overcrowded classrooms - not enough desks, etc. but usually by count day they were able to straighten it out.

Pros

Medical and retirement benefits are considered good.

Cons

Lack of teacher support, services for special needs children regularly denied, most admin are incompetent and demeaning to teachers, academics interrupted for time consuming fund raisers, year to year 2,000 teacher shortage (permanent long term unqualified subs in 2,000 positions, teacher expectations increase every year without supports, mandated daily & overall teacher paperwork takes up over 50% of teachers time! Burn out and maintaining positive energy to give to students is challenge. Finally, excessive changes of testing, lesson delivery, curriculum, computer programs, reporting procedures...etc..
