Bullying. Leadership knows it’s rampant and pretends not to notice. The behavior is encouraged and those who bully move ahead with zero accountability. If you’re unfortunate enough to be subject to it yet bring it to leadership, you’ll wish you hadn’t. You’ll be met with condescending laughter or be reminded to merely accept “that’s how some people act”. The known and accepted practice of bullying of females by white males in positions of power is disturbing.
Backpedaling. Leaders conveniently forget what they told you or opt to change course on a whim. But that’s assuming you have a leader who provides any direction. Most will either ignore any pleas for needed decisions, input or involvement or arrogantly assume they know your job best. You’re largely left to determine your own direction and when you do, laughable salary increases and pitiful bonuses.
Backstabbing. Trust no one within this organization. There is zero discretion or confidentiality that exists. If they talk about everyone else, they’re talking about you too. Public shaming, blaming and rudeness is the name of the game. You’ll see it in meetings, in person or over email. There’s pure empowerment to say no to anything with no consequence.
Get used to personal conversations or staff meetings being secretly recorded either for fun, to be shared on social media or for evidence to bring to HR, who just turn a blind eye. Policies are created only to be broken as there is zero consistency across the organization.
I spoke to my manager repeatedly about what I saw and what I was subject to; zero interest. When I finally found my HR rep after my manager proved useless? HR had less than zero interest.
And their new compliance line? Also called them as a last resort regarding some disturbing practices. Zero interest as those practices are continuing.
Nothing has changed or will change because nobody cares.
