Pros

Work-life balance (prior to layoffs)

Cons

Leadership executed a deeply misleading and poorly managed “restructure.” A new 6–9 step sales methodology was rolled out in phases, yet reps were graded on all steps in live calls before being trained on them. Managers were still learning how to score the rubric, resulting in failing evaluations for criteria employees had not been taught. After rolling out raises, increased incentives, expanded benefits, and a highly publicized sales contest, the company abruptly issued a layoff warning and canceled the required training and role-play session the same day. Severance had already been significantly reduced beforehand. The company is backed by large institutional/private equity ownership, and decisions appeared driven by cost-cutting and optics rather than employee development or ethical change management. The process lacked transparency, fairness, and basic operational integrity. Employees were asked to commit to new standards without being given the tools to meet them, then were treated as disposable. Proceed with extreme caution.

Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed reflection on your experience. We are glad that you enjoyed a positive work-life balance for much of your tenure, and we sincerely appreciate the five-plus years you spent as an Inker. Regarding the sales methodology rollout, our intent was to introduce a consistent framework and use call reviews as a baseline coaching tool. The scoring was designed to help both Account Executives and their leaders identify development areas and strengths. We recognize, however, that the feeling evaluated while everyone was still learning the new methodology may not have felt as supportive as intended. While organizational decisions are often made to ensure long-term sustainability, we recognize that the way these changes are managed has a profound impact on our people. Your feedback regarding communication, fairness, and the need for better tools is invaluable as we reflect on how to best support our teams. We’re grateful for the time you spent here and genuinely wish you the best moving forward.

Pros

Remote opportunity and relatively fair wages.

Cons

They’ve decided to automate so many systems that actually require a human touch that it makes things a lot more stressful for both the customer and the employees.

Thank you for sharing your perspective. We're glad to hear you found value in the remote flexibility and compensation, and we appreciate you highlighting those positives. We also hear your concerns around the impact of automation on both the customer and team member experience. As we grow and evolve, we strive to balance operational efficiency with the personal touch that has long been a hallmark of Custom Ink’s service and culture. Your feedback is a helpful reminder of how important that balance is, and we’re committed to continuing to assess where technology supports — rather than replaces — meaningful human connection. We also appreciate your thoughtful advice to leadership. Staying true to our core values while adapting to change is something we take seriously, and insights like yours help us stay grounded as we move forward. Thank you again for taking the time to share your experience.

Pros

Good people, not including management. A lot of training.

Cons

Bad management, childish favoritism, inability to pick a direction and stick with it, the list goes on. The biggest con was the absolute hypocrisy when it came to company ethics. I've never seen a company blow so much smoke about how to treat people and then do the exact opposite. There was also no clear path up in this role without relocating. Which I'm glad I didn't do, as custom ink relocated a bunch of production employees and then fired them too. Right before outsourcing art overseas, despite having an excellent art team.

Thank you for sharing your experience. We’re sorry to hear that your time at Custom Ink didn’t reflect the values we aim to uphold, especially around fairness, leadership, and how we treat one another. That’s difficult to read, and we take feedback like this seriously. It’s encouraging to know you had positive interactions with teammates and found value in our training programs—we believe strongly in the importance of learning and connection, and we’re grateful you experienced that during your time with us. We appreciate the honesty in your review and are always working to learn from experiences like yours. If you’re open to continuing the conversation privately, we’d welcome the chance to hear more.
