Pros
-SmartSense has a great opportunity to quickly corner a large market. -The startup environment means things are more relaxed and there is a lot of room to grow. -Coworkers are friendly, honest, and passionate about what they do. I have been at SmartSense for less than a year so my perspective is different than coworkers who have gone through the acquisition process which left some deep scars. I think when we take a step back and really look at what we are building toward this really is a great place to work with fun people and a product that keeps customers safe. I also think the new upper management cares about all of us and wants to see us succeed. Sometimes we forget that they also have bosses or a board of directors they have to report to. They cannot always do the most beneficial thing in the fastest way possible but the trend is positive.
Cons
-The transition from a startup to a more mature and structured company is causing friction and frustration among many not ready for the change. -Being part of a public company with an HQ in the midwest and a slower way of doing things has its challenges but we must push our culture on them. I completely understand coworker frustrations with pay in such a hot job market especially when they see friends changing jobs for 20% raises. If you are unhappy, my honest advice is to present SmartSense with your new job offer and ask for a counteroffer. You might be pleasantly surprised. If not, you should do what is best for your career. Do not try to be a martyr. Go where you can make yourself the best person professionally and personally.
