Pros

Store Hours, Decent Pay (as far as retail jobs go), hour-long lunches, employee discounts.

Cons

Outdated computer systems, geriatric merchandise buyers (particularly in the home and lingerie departments) buying tacky/hideous/outdated/unsexy merchandise, managers who either micromanage or won't leave their office, misleading information given during the interview process regarding scheduling and the ability to "choose which department" you end up in. I'm a passionate, hard worker. During training, I was placed in a department that I was originally nervous about, but excelled in. I really loved that department and fell in love with it. I was so excited to work at Dillard's and I was consistently selling more than $250/hr in said department. I let my boss know that I definitely wanted to be in that department and told her how much I loved it. She put me in a few other departments. I think she thought I would do well in one of them, but I absolutely hated it. Finally, at the end of the training, imagine my surprise when I was placed in a department I hadn't ever even stepped foot into. I saw my $250/hr sales average plummet to nearly $40/hr. It was a horrible fit. I tried talking to management about it, and was ignored. I've really been trying to make the most out of it, but there is no money to be made in the deadest, most outdated section of the store. Most of our "customers" just took a wrong turn on their way to the bathroom. They claim to pay "the big bucks" but it is only "the big bucks" to someone who has never actually made "the big bucks". Managers and employees can be very catty at times.

Pros

It's a job that could be a jump-off point for sales or learning

Cons

No autonomy in your work. You work hard but it's never enough. You may make the top 10 list once every week it's just a list, and does not equate to any quantifiable bonus. The company has a revolving door of employees and their system of business is very lean. They are always in the saving money mode and try to squeeze as much as they can from the employees. Their main goal is making goals and sales. You could be excellent with customers with a stellar reputation but will reduce your pay if you don't make your sales goal. Customer service is not valued or quantifiable. They will give their employees the bare minimum. There are no perks or incentives to sell. Although you are told in the training that they want you to give the "5-star" treatment and sell across different departments, the work culture there is not conducive to it. No one supports that at all. There is a high tolerance for mistreatment by fellow co-workers and managers. I was present during a stressful time of one of the mall shootings. And instead of management or corporate saying you can go home or take some time or have some type of reach out to the employees. They opened back up and wanted everyone to be like business a assual. Work-life balance does not exist there.

Pros

The 25% off discount and 1 hour lunch. That's all...

Cons

-Dillard's has the worst toxic work culture of any company. It is filled with miserable employees who have worked there for 10+ years and who refuse to do anything better in their lives. -You can hear the gossiping all the time in the cubicles. -All assistant buyers who start here realize right away that this is not the place they want to be. They work until they can't take it anymore or get a promotion then run out. -There is no HR. And forget about voicing your concerns to your manager, they will use your words against you. -You will be overworked with 45+ hours a week. -The average salary for a buyer is way lower than the national average. -Offices are dirty and the technology is so out of date that it's laughable.
