Pros

Working at Discovery gave me the opportunity to work with patients and connect on a deeper level than a job at an inpatient facility would allow. Nothing feels better than knowing you helped someone along in their recovery and knowing that you made a difference in someone's life, even if it was just a small one.

Cons

Center for Discovery does not value their employees as they claim. Not only are employees not paid nearly enough for what they do, but they then blame management for the high turn-over rate due to employees leaving for not being compensated enough. Because of this, many of the passionate and competent employees leave and the program is left short-staffed, with the remaining employees unsuited to care for children with mental health issues. Some examples of this include, but are not limited to: Mental Health Techs (MHT) who spend all of their time on their phone or out of the milieu socializing with their colleagues, leaving their coworkers to handle 14 patients alone (which is a huge safety hazard); MHT's who do not know how to leave their personal issues at the door and end up creating a tense environment for both the patients and colleagues; a management team who ignores the concerns and complaints of their patients (ex: patients complaining they cannot sleep at night due to the PM and overnight staff talking very loudly and keeping them awake); and a management team who is biased and more concerned about staff members who stroke their egos rather than staff members who are concerned about the safety and well being of the patients. There is much more to say, but in conclusion, the environment is toxic and the management and staff are ignorant and tactless.

Pros

-Great facility manager (thanks Matt) and program director (thanks Brittanie) -Great floor staff (thanks everyone) -Great clinical team (thanks therapists) -Free snacks and chef-cooked meals (thanks Nikki) -Seeing adolescent patients grow in treatment -Great entry-level job (for about a year) for undergrads who want to work in clinical settings with patients

Cons

-High turnover rate of MHTs -Poor pay; MHTs are the ones trained for self-defense and creating a livable space for patients yet aren't getting paid a livable wage -Poor training; new MHTs mostly learn rules and restrictions on the go/the hard way -Company insists on having a full house of patients while understaffed leading to burnout and increase in patients' sneaky behavior -Company will admit and hang onto patients who are psychotic, violent, or high AWOL risk when they should be in a locked facility that's designed to handle such patients -No room for growth or willingness to change company policies based on MHT's observations and concerns

Pros

-Getting to connect with my patients

Cons

The people in the facility act very immature. My time working at this placement was very short. There's excessive favoritism and the leadership is so blind to everything that's occurring. If you end up on the wrong person's bad side they will work to get you fired. I've seen how people manipulated and talked to the staff. Being at this place made me feel uncomfortable due to the lack of diversity and just overall environment. Management was always spiteful towards employees. If you're reading this review do yourself a favor and DO NOT APPLY! I read the reviews and didn't listen and I'm no longer working at the company. If you're a therapist don't even think about it!
