Poor coding practices even among seasoned developers; the emphasis is on getting it done rather than getting it done right. Terrible facilities; you should expect to work in a windowless closet. If you need IT support, better try to fix it yourself, as they can take hours or days to arrive. Arbitrary evaluation; I was threatened with early termination without a clear performance evaluation, and for reasons unrelated to my measurable performance. General posturing; most people have neither the skills nor the desire to recognize good technical work. Expect to be surrounded by people trying to appear as smart as possible. Expect decisions to be made solely on how much people like you.
