Pros

Great team to work with, if there wasn't such a high turnover rate.

Cons

Terrible leadership, employees are treated expendable, huge turn over rate, board should look into leadership as they are very corrupt

Pros

Pretty much everyone is passionate about environmental causes Most of the people that leadership hires have great backgrounds and are excellent at what they do They have good benefits You will get a lot of experience working in a short period of time here as it such a small place

Cons

There are no concrete goals or clear job expectations Since there are no concrete goals or job expectations, there are no performance reviews, you will never be sure how you're doing, but after the honeymoon period, it probably won't be good enough There is no strategic plan Any priorities that do exist can shift at the drop of a hat and suddenly all the work you've done on something is pointless If something is on leadership's mind, it's suddenly the top priority for everyone regardless of anything else happening or any real need for this to be a top priority You are expected to be checking email 24/7 and working nights and weekends, not just around Earth Day The workload is incredible, even if you do work 24/7, it will never be enough Working here was like working in a tornado Organization efficiency is not great - there aren't great systems in place, you can't pull data for things and it's not something they want to invest in because they don't want to spend the money but in the long run it would save them a lot of money There is little to no staff recognition for good work - they will say things like "best Earth Day ever" and then turn around and say people aren't doing enough More than 50% of the time leadership approaches things from the perspective that everyone expect them are idiots

Poor Management and Lack of Vision Ruins a Noble Cause

Pros

Low and mid level staff are endlessly optimistic and driven to take action on the defining issue of our time. Despite the detrimental management, employees who work on their projects and defend their territory can find personal success and career growth. I had the pleasure to work with such people, most of whom have moved on to better situations.

Cons

The first Glassdoor review, from 2009, reads: "Sr Management ranges from incompetent to mean. It is a very hostile, anxious environment. It is very disorganized. There are no clearly defined goals -- let alone guidance toward achieving those goals. Credit is not given where it is due. Also, they will work you like a dog and barely thank you." The same holds true for today, where the upper management has yet to change their ways or leave. The Board is uninterested in the day-to-day, making pleas for change difficult to gain momentum. You will be tempted by the noble mission of the organization to ignore some of these reviews. Barring a thorough shake-up of this org, you will come to see the core of cynicism at the senior level that derails the majority of important work staff tries to accomplish. Most staff receives unfair treatment or scorn to their face or behind their back. Be cautious accepting a role here, knowing that you will work beyond your job description, late hours with low compensation or recognition. If your colleague leaves, expect to be given an entire new program to add to your work load. If you do well, prepare to have your victories sniped by senior staff. If you do poorly, prepare for deeply cynical office politics.
