Pros

Block is a huge company and when I joined I was afraid of just being a cog in a giant wheel. That has not been the case at all. There have been so many things that I have enjoyed during my time with H&R Block, and I’m listing some of them here: Leadership that is willing to do the right hard thing, and not just the easy thing. Being bold is encouraged! Block wants you to be bold in your ideas and will support you to bring those ideas to fruition. Huge opportunities to grow and develop and leadership that is not afraid to help you grow. Belonging groups! This is so refreshing! The drive for inclusivity and the ownership Block has given these groups is great to see. We have COLORS, which is our LGBTQ+ and allies group. We also have a veteran's belonging group and a neurodiverse group and a larger belonging council. On top of that, we have a women’s network and a young professionals network. These groups are so supported and empowered that several of the events they’ve put on have been open to the public, which is such a rarity. On the topic of belonging, it is so refreshing having a company that is unapologetic in its commitment to human rights and a CEO that is not afraid to express a stance on current events. It makes those impacted by social injustices or those that are part of under-represented minorities feel seen and valued or at least that is my experience. In my experience, I’ve noticed very transparent communications. I haven’t felt the normal big company smoke and mirrors here - everyone is very straightforward. A real interest in building great talent internally. Block is willing to invest in you and your career.

Cons

So far so good. Oddly enough I don’t have any cons to report

Pros

H&R Block provides thorough training, and employees should expect to study continuously throughout the season. The training is valuable and helps build a strong understanding of tax preparation. There are opportunities to "level up," and advancing through the certification levels can lead to higher pay over time. Management is approachable and readily available when assistance is needed.

Cons

The position is seasonal, and the starting pay is $12 per hour. During peak tax season, employees may work very long hours—sometimes up to 10 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week—which can be physically and mentally exhausting. In my first month, I also found that some of the staff were not especially welcoming, which made the initial adjustment more challenging.
