Pros

The training is very good.

Cons

The amount of products you must push on people is ridiculous! They don't "get" that a two week advance (refund anticipation check) of their refund involves a loan interest rate north of 50-60% -- you do show it to them but people are salivating about the refund amount. They push their lousy Emerald card on people, because most of their clientele do not have bank accounts. The supervisor in my office HAD NO TAX EXPERIENCE -- she was just an administrator - ludicrous! The other preparers don't want to help you and act a bit hostile if you have questions. It's stressful because of that, and I'm certain the turnover is rather high. My supervisor sat and played cards during slow days (usually by March). PLAYED CARDS RIGHT AT HER DESK. If she had tax experience she could have been checking returns or something useful. I question their corporate ethics -- they take advantage of the disadvantaged.

Pros

H&R Block provides thorough training, and employees should expect to study continuously throughout the season. The training is valuable and helps build a strong understanding of tax preparation. There are opportunities to "level up," and advancing through the certification levels can lead to higher pay over time. Management is approachable and readily available when assistance is needed.

Cons

The position is seasonal, and the starting pay is $12 per hour. During peak tax season, employees may work very long hours—sometimes up to 10 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week—which can be physically and mentally exhausting. In my first month, I also found that some of the staff were not especially welcoming, which made the initial adjustment more challenging.
