Pros

Free food and snacks, late AM starting hours, great perks.

Cons

A lot of lip service is paid to the motto "strong backs and open hearts". Yet a number of the managers are bullies and are quick to throw their people under the bus. A general lack of skilled managers leading departments, who do not understand how to do the tasks their subordinates are working on & therefore can't judge performance accurately. Department direction is kept a secret or not even thought out and constantly changes. Little to no room for career advancement and/or growth. Reviews and promotions are based completely on feelings, and not about productivity and professional contribution. Little to no room for upward mobility.

Pros

Good benefits, nice people. Dogs running around.

Cons

Diversity does not really matter. Engineering needs more women. CFO only cares about success of women. Other types of diversity don't seem to be a priority.

Thoughtful intentions, duplicitous actions.

Pros

Good benefits, though nowhere near as good as other tech/commerce companies. Mental health days. Thoughtful, empathetic culture (to a point). Fun office. Good people.

Cons

Far too much first-time, ineffective middle management, stalling out decisions in endless cycles of approval and causing toxic stress where there shouldn't be. Ineffective managers do not trust subject matter experts. Performance review feedback given is often not actioned, meaning potentially toxic situations do not improve. Internal promotions are hard to come by. Company spends money in mind-bogglingly frivolous ways but then has layoffs without cutting leadership salaries or allowing employees to find another internal role. Constant restructuring is woefully misguided, cutting important roles and basic services that any company should have. Work/life balance became worse over the years. Work often felt meaningless and isolating due to constantly changing priorities.

Thank you for this thorough feedback. In an effort to ensure the long-term success of our employees, we have amped up both employee and management development by investing in internal resources like our Pathways Programming – helping employees to understand performance expectations, progression opportunities, and the development resources available to them – as well as additional tooling and professional development budgets. We’ve also received great feedback about our Focus Days and Breaksgivings, which allow employees to recharge, as well as mental wellbeing offerings such as the Mental Health Days you mentioned. We are optimistic that these steps will address the concerns you’ve raised here, and we have already seen progress in this regard. However, we’re concerned to hear your comments about toxic stress and situations. This is not something we find acceptable, and Management and HR are trained and available to support any employee who feels that Etsy’s standards of kind and respectful communication may not have been upheld. We encourage any employees who may feel similarly to reach out to their manager and/or HR Business partner – whose information they can find on the Intraknit – for confidential assistance.
