They say they care, but they really don't

Pros

The pharmacy benefits management (PBM) industry is a very interesting and dynamic industry. You do learn a lot.

Cons

Senior management's transparency is almost non-existent. They don't care about work-life balance. They are an internally-focused, nickel and dime organization that also pays St. Louis, MO wages across the country, meaning if you live on the West Coast or the East Coast, don't expect to get a salary that matches your area's cost of living for the amount of work they want you to do. The hierarchal culture and politics are ridiculous, and creates a lot of miscommunication and misunderstanding. The integrating between Express Scripts and Medco (my company who they bought out) has been an absolute nightmare. Top talent keeps walking out the door. The layoffs. It's just sad.

Pros

Should receive a severance package soon

Cons

Rated the 2nd worst company in America to work for by the Wall Street Journal. Employee feedback on company survey was so negative, the results were never published. Merger with Medco is a disaster, way too costly and way behind schedule, heads will roll. Cash flow is starting to be a huge problem. Rapidly losing membership lives to private exchanges. Sr. Management starting to panic since they were told they will held directly responsible for the poor results now, not lower level employees. Since they can't grow revenues, they must cut expenses which means mass layoffs by year end. Franklin Lakes building is too costly, trying to get rid of at any cost.

Pros

The work life balance was good. I rarely had to take work home with me. The pay was appropriate, and I do like the PTO bank as opposed to separate days for sick / personal, etc.

Cons

If you work out of the Franklin Lakes New Jersey facility, there is a good chance you could finish your entire career without ever feeling safe in your job. The layoffs have been stretched out over a period of years and show no signs of abating. They also LOVE to micro-manage.

Pros

Good pay and bonus, stock options and grants for mid-level and above. Decent PTO

Cons

Poor work-life balance in many areas, IT and operations especially. Annual layoffs impacting many areas. I knew no one that was proud to say they worked for Express Scripts. Company doesn't foster team environment. Advancement is often based on appearances and not performance. Proven improvements to systems and processes are ignored with the fear of exposing other failures and incompetence. CEO often jokes about layoffs in quarterly employee meetings.

Pros

There are some good points to this company, those being the current salary and health insurance. Our location is union and I suspect this is the only reason we enjoy these perks. Unfortunately that is seemingly where the pros end.

Cons

No consistency in operations/policies, and managerial decisions rarely make sense. Time is often wasted being pulled into "huddles" where nothing is seemingly accomplished and the same things are being said every time like they are scripted. Training, is a joke. You are given a very rudimentary idea of how to do a job and then left to basically figure it out on your own. Don't rely on current operational procedures to remain consistent, as they will change and you will likely not be notified of this. There is also the "layoff factor". I realize that layoffs are a fact of life, especially when working in pharmaceuticals, but from what I've seen and read this factor is amplified to the extreme with this particular company. This can't be good for employee morale.

Pros

Most people are generally friendly, at least a few people are willing to collaborate in each department. The majority of employees try to do a good job

Cons

Everything else. There is no work-life balance for anyone, even for direct supervisors. Management is expected to give the lip-service about patient care and quality of work but outside of meetings everyone knows there is too much red tape, miscommunication, and poor training to get the work done correctly. This company cares about its bottom line, never let them tell you different. The pay depends on who you worked for before the merger. From the Medco side, they have announced massive layoffs and closed entire facilities, then hired on the Express Scripts side for lower pay. With lower pay comes less experience, just another barrier to quality care for the patient. Raises and bonuses have been frozen for 3 years and I don't expect that to change. The employees have nothing to work towards or achieve other than their next paycheck and that is the only thing that keeps most of us there until we can find something else. They also REQUIRE you to use their services or the prescription plan won't cover the medications at the same rate. I've learned that this requirement isn't just for employees, its also for patients (including my own mother who works for company in contract to Express Scripts.) I have never, EVER felt so undervalued as an employee.

Pros

None. Working for this company was horrible.

Cons

Every day hung over the employees the possibility of layoffs...if you worked anywhere other than in St Louis. Direction is supposed to trickle down, giving employees no view into the big picture of their responsibilities...resulting in shoddy Frankenstein-like solutions. The timelines on projects are nothing short of ridiculous, and the attitude is to get things implemented and worry about whether it runs or is correct later. One day, there will be major compliance implications. Oh, and "pharmacy that goes farther" is the most horrible grammatical error in a slogan I have ever heard. It makes me embarrassed to have worked there.
