Don’t Work Here Unless You Like to be Micromanaged

Pros

The PTO accrual is good but even that has its issues. You have to use PTO in 4 hour increments. You don’t accrue any sick days so wave goodbye to your PTO when you get sick. I would say that the true pro is the healthcare package which has a reasonable co-pay and is about $150 per check. Use it to your full advantage! Especially the behavior health and therapy coverage because you will need it considering all the stress that comes with being a part of this organization.

Cons

Management do not trust their employees and make top-down decisions that are irrelevant to the programs being offered. This unnecessary red tape that makes it harder for employees to do their job. There is constant micromanaging and pressure to perform with no space, time, or resources. People at FSC love the chain of command and this doesn’t sit well with me. Instead of addressing issues and praise with me, people will email my supervisor to let me know. I found this to be unsettling under both positive and negative contexts. I am continually repulsed by the organization’s commitment to the TTS curriculum which turns a blind eye to power. TTS frames poverty as a disease that needs to be treated. It is stigmatizing and disempowering.

Thank for taking the time to leave a review. There are a couple of criticisms in here that are important to address. For PTO, most of our staff like the PTO because it allows you to use time for being sick or vacation. That way you don't end up losing sick days at the end of the year because you didn't get sick, as happens at many other companies. It is worrying that you feel "repulsed" by our usage of the Transition to Success model and I think you have missed the point of the approach. TTS does not frame poverty as a "disease," rather as a treatable condition - that is, something that can be changed. Dr. Wilson used a medical analogy because she was specifically trying to move away from the stigmatizing and disempowering conception of poverty as some sort of inherent character flaw. She is trying to show that poverty is situational, not someone's "fault." With support and services, we work with participants to understand and plan for their dreams.

Pros

FSC allows flexibility and creativity. It is a great place to work.

Cons

Much of the funding is grant based so you are working with soft money. That said, I've been with the company in grant based programs for more than 30 years.

Pros

Coworkers/line staff that are busting their butts working with participants to help them positively change their lives.

Cons

The company used to be in only 4 counties in WI. Corporate was always in Madison but due to the comanies smaller size, it was the best working environment. Since their expansion to now 49ish county's, the company is now all about Corporate and their needs. Middle management get directed by HR on a path for a performance improvement plan because in Corporates eyes, the worker has low "performance numbers". HR/Corporate/directors/PC's/APC's don't even see the participant's as people, higher up "management" pressures middle management (like team leads) to start the "documentation" process to get that worker fired. The best, is when the worker retaliates against the TL, HR takes the side of the line staff and opens investigations on the team lead. Team leaders have ZERO support and when it comes to a "false accusation," that team leader goes through hell and is NOT supported by upper management and made to be the bad guy. I've had this happen to me, and also seen this happen to others. HR is their own island that turns staff and management against each other. I have seen workers in this company (those that actually care) develop significant mental health from the toxicity. Any reviews that are positive are mostly going to be false as staff are being told to leave a good review. And now, offering incentives for those to leave a good review.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. There's a lot to discuss here, but I'd like to address a few points. 1) As an organization, we certainly do care about our employees’ wellbeing and their opinions. We have the regular pulse surveys and maintain an open-door policy. 2) Offering any sort of compensation for a positive review is definitely not a corporate initiative and we have not “paid” for the positive reviews in any way. Even if we wanted to, there isn’t any way for us to know who left a review for us - positive or negative. 3) The 240 PTO hours you're referring to was a change in policy due to the pandemic. Previously, staff could not roll over that much, and it made a huge difference when they couldn't go on vacation or didn't use it up for other reasons that year. To keep the hours from vanishing, we changed our policy to allow more PTO rollover. We do hope our staff will enjoy their time as needed - whether it's a vacation or long weekends. 4) I'm sorry to read about your experience as a Team Lead. It's a title you've earned through hard work and dedication. We want to support you well. I've come to appreciate the family nature of FSC during my tenure here as well, and given that you're still with us, you must believe in your work. Please reach out to your supervisors and HR to talk so we can make changes that improve life for staff and, in turn, for our clients.
