Pros

Free snacks and beverages, at least used to be, Monthly powwow highlighting what's going on. Owner is generous when it comes to outings on his boat, etc. Paintball

Cons

Many of the folks at this pressure cooker have been here WAY TOO LONG! Each department is it's own little fiefdom. Managers are all about their own space, and not working towards the greater goal. Lots of favoritism, and cronyism. It's the established people, vs. the newbies. Their process is extremely broken. They don't use even the most basic of SDLC rules. The environment is extremely high-stress, doesn't have to be, just certain managers love to stir up the pot (you know who you are). H.R. Loves to pull shenanigans with the staff. "Come talk with us in private", and then your manager finds out you have been talking to H.R. about them. They also treat their contractors like crap. Just all in a ll, not a great place to work.

I noticed we haven't posted a response to this as I was browsing through our comments. I've been with the company for 9 years now, working my way from Program Management to CEO. It hasn't been easy and times have been challenging, but boy did I grow. I saw what we should do and what we shouldn't do and now I get to steer the ship. Along with myself, is a group of awesome individuals that have stuck with it and are now leading the way. We're rebuilding our teams, our company and our software. Now, this is fun!

Don't Quit Your Former Job

Pros

Free drinks. (Pay for snacks though)

Cons

One star ratings are usually left by disgruntled former employees. But in the case of Fulcrum, I strongly advise you to reconsider. Their hiring practice is to hire someone, tell them they have a job, and then use the first day on the job as the final part of the interview process. If they don't like you for whatever reason (the most common excuse was "not the right fit") they'd fire you, day one. Since Washington's an at will state, they don't see a problem with this. During my time at Fulcrum, I saw more than 30 people come and go like this. If for some reason you do decide to seek employment here, I urge you to not quit your old job until at least a day after you start here. The company culture is not healthy. The managers of different departments fight with each other over simple disagreements, in front of employees. Projects are not budgeted time for planning (we just have to get something out right now), so deliverables to clients suffer in terms of quality and cost. Many times, someone would be assigned to a task, only for management to realize weeks later that the task had no value since the new plan would invalidate it. This was a regular occurrence systemic of the company culture to just get something out the door and deal with the consequences later. People are not treated with respect or understanding. When projects change, if someone needs simple training for a new task, they'd rather fire them and get someone new (we're too busy to stop and teach them, they're just not the right fit for us anymore). If someone is severely sick for a few days, they're let go (not the right fit). Turnover rate is high. I don't want to give the indication that everyone there is mean and incompetent - there are some very friendly and knowledgeable people (shout out to Carlos, one of the most senior employees there). Unfortunately, they do not dictate company culture. Most good people end up leaving - it's a high stress, low reward environment. If you feel this is just the angry rambling of a disgruntled former employee, ask them in the interview process what the owner's plan is for the company in the next few years. See if as a new employee you'll be a part of that.

Thank you for your review. This was quite hard to read and I can’t agree with how it represents the experience of the employees here. In the 16 years that I’ve been here, (I followed up with our HR manager) I don’t believe we’ve ever let anyone go, let alone 30 people, on their first day, and especially on the grounds of bad fit. We have had situations where things did not work out over a period of time due to our mismatch, we placed a person that needed strict regimen into a high task switching position. We continue to work on improving here. Over the last year we have been in a growth phase as we expanded operations in India (We signed the largest carrier in India for ALM!) and that can increase stress levels as we encounter new challenges. We’ve learned from it and are planning better. It’s been a fun and sometimes frustrating learning curve. Sure, it seems crazy at times and a needed redirection in business can make past efforts seem invalid. We do work quite hard to treat our people with respect and a lot of understanding. We’ve actually avoided the fire and hire mentality, and would run lean in dealing with the ebb and flow of projects. This adds its own set of challenges too. When we have a parting of the ways with an employee, we offer a good severance and often work with a job placement service to assist them. We’ve worked many times for our people with extended illness and injury, by helping with extended leave and pulling in contractors to cover for them until they can get back in the saddle. You are absolutely correct in your mentioning of one of our great people. He’s been here longer than myself! And he does influence our culture in a very positive way. Are we perfect, nope, but always working to be better.

Good friends, but lacking decisive leadership

Pros

Fulcrum is very laid back and everyone, including the executives, knows your name and values you like a true friend. The benefits are pretty good, especially the generous PTO. As well, they are quite flexible on scheduling; if you need to work from home while caring for a sick child, or even to just let a plumber in, you can just let your team know and they will accommodate you working from home for a day.

Cons

The company straddles product development and consulting and thus must be responsible for both. Selling products to customers is hard because new customers are hard to come by; fulfilling change orders and maintenance is challenging without stepping outside the scope of the product. Product development is understaffed, but there are not enough new customers to justify hiring more hands.

The comments about our product development challenges are valid. Our customers are all telecom carriers, like Verizon, T-Mobile and Airtel in India. Because they are massive companies with complex requirements we must be flexible to accommodate their needs while still improving and updating our software. This can be very challenging at times. To address this issue six months ago we began an initiative called The 4 Disciplines of Execution (4DX) based upon the book by the same name. Every team member who works in product development, consulting or a related discipline had input into creating a Wildly Important Goal (WIG) around the direction of our product and as a result each team and each individual contribute towards that goal in a measured way on a weekly basis. 4DX is helping us to align the needs of all customers on a common platform and improve our product at the same time. Since implementing 4DX and working towards a shared WIG we have made great progress on our product road-map and I am hopeful that soon the kinds of challenges mentioned in this review will be largely a thing of the past.
