Pros

Decent health care package, but you'll need it to to deal with the stress of working at Garmin. Some fairly competent co-workers, but their best efforts are squandered by management.

Cons

Upper management lacks strategic vision. Case in point is the Garmin smartphone debacle. Management can't decide what product strategy to pursue, so they demand that engineering work on all possible combinations, and then they complain when it doesn't come together on time. Middle management is populated by people who have no clue how to manage people, much less show any leadership traits. Work at Garmin degenerates into a rat race of competing with your fellow co-worker for projects, appreciation, promotions, and ultimately your salary. Favoritism is rampant, and promotions and project assignments are mostly based on the buddy system. Young recruits straight from college are favored over experienced professionals, as they don't seem to realize how horrible things have become at Garmin.

Pros

- Talented, motivated coworkers who care about doing quality work. - Opportunities to contribute to meaningful, technically interesting projects. - Generally fair performance review process with clear expectations. - Historically a solid benefits package and stable environment.

Cons

- Recent changes to work flexibility, including the removal of hybrid options, were made with limited visible consideration for employee feedback. - There is a growing disconnect between internal experience and external messaging about company culture and employee support. - Workloads have increased over time, particularly for experienced individual contributors. - Accumulating technical debt makes it harder to maintain quality and sustainability. - Career progression can feel slow, even for consistently strong performers, especially as responsibilities continue to expand. - Several long-standing perks and forms of flexibility have been reduced gradually, impacting morale.

Removing hybrid work universally is a mistake

Pros

A lot of the individuals I work with are fantastic. The benefits are strong, but the annual compensation review overestimates the value they add to you by double counting the PTO as additional compensation.

Cons

They removed the option for hybrid work, and will not be flexible by location or position. Most locations will have to complete this in the next few months, but HQ will get all the way until 2027. The HR isn't great on several fronts: - handling requests for accessibility/accommodations - they don't really dialogue, more just springs a meeting on you to tell you what they've decided you can have - half baked policies shoot off without actually considering what they want to change - poor training for managers - 'good engineers' are tolerated regardless of other bad behavior In general the company wants to continue acting like HQ is the only location, when there are 2 additional sites in Olathe alone, let alone the number of US and international offices.
