Pros

Good, smart people to work with Coworkers, and even management, are really pleasant people Good pay Nice benefits, particularly the tech reimbursement which others have mentioned Good relationship with local community, leads to special perks and discounts at local businesses (what few there are...)

Cons

Located in the middle of nowhere, with a looooooong commute from anyplace decent to live in any direction! Many employees have commutes of 30-60 minutes or worse, both ways. Being located in either Philadelphia or Reading would be good. Halfway between them... not so much. Parking lot is too small. (Made worse by the fact that it's out in the middle of nowhere and therefore infeasible to walk to work.) Bureaucracy bureaucracy bureaucracy bureaucracy bureaucracy! The employee manual is over 100 pages long! Status meetings every day that don't accomplish anything useful whatsoever. There are two days every three weeks where 1/2 to 2/3 of your entire day will be utterly wasted by useless meetings. There's an unhealthy fixation on time logging for everything, even non-billable projects. There used to be project-based status meetings that took too much time but actually helped keep everyone on the same page. These got replaced by "team-based" status meetings that do nothing useful because you aren't actually working together with the people on your "team," so you spend most of the time sitting around listening to people talk about stuff that has nothing whatsoever to do with anything you're working on. That was *not* an improvement! It's a 30-year-old software company, which means a 30-year-old codebase, and it really shows in some places. Technical debt abounds and no one seems to be in any hurry to clean it up! Goals are constantly being moved around, which is highly stressful to technical workers. The number of open support issues was cut by over 50% during 2015, chasing a goal that kept getting lower and lower every time employees almost caught up. I don't think that goal has been "green" for three straight days at any point in 2015 or 2016, which means it's not actually a goal at all, but rather a treadmill.

Pros

The company is located in Gilbertsville in a beautiful, modern office. For the majority of people it is commuting against the traffic which is a huge advantage and appreciated by anyone who has sat on 422 going into King of Prussia The office is fantastic and the company management team does a fantastic job of communicating to employees. Each month the company has a meeting to recognize new employees, acknowledge exemplary performance and to present the company financials. After the meeting (which is held in the company auditorium) there is cake to celebrate employee birthdays for the month as well as free drinks including beer. The company has a generous vacation plan and a flexible work from home schedule depending on your department.

Cons

There are no cons. You will be challenged as the software and hardware configurations can be complex.

Great Place full of Smart People

Pros

I've been working at Gateway for almost a decade and have to say by and large it's a really wonderful place to be. It's very flexible in terms of start and end times of your day as well as having a generous work from home policy. Most people are permitted two days a week from home as a general rule, but exceptions around children, feeling under the weather, appointments are almost always honored. As with any place, as long as the employee is productive and adding value, things are pretty sweet. There are also very smart people here; creative problem solving is appreciated and even lunch time conversation can be incredibly stimulating. There is a lot of laughing in the hallways and people generally seem to enjoy being there. There are free drinks available via a soda fountain, a stocked fridge and monthly company happy hours to celebrate employees' birthdays complete with cake and beer and soda. The company is also quite transparent about their financials, sharing all information in a monthly company meeting. Efforts are made to keep the company apprised of what is happening in each of the departments. There are some interesting benefits, the most unique of which is a 50% reimbursement program on the purchase of technical equipment. If I buy a new laptop at home, Gateway reimburses me 50% of its cost. The people, the people, the people. Smart, funny, caring and great people to be around.

Cons

There are some problems here like anywhere else. There seems to be a hesitance to share ideas with executive management because they are not always met with an open attitude. There also seems to be a problem with really getting information shared inter-departmentally as everyone is working so hard that luxuries like communication and documentation can sometimes fall by the wayside. There is also a clique-ish-ness that has cropped over the past few years that does feel great. If you're not one of the 'cool kids', it can feel like a middle school environment. Career paths are often not available for many positions, although that's getting a bit better as the company grows.
