A lot of Problems for the Little Guy

Pros

The big pro was my fellow co-workers, especially in my department, we were the workhorses and when you work in a rough environment it makes kind of a brotherhood. Pay was also slightly better than usual

Cons

Management is the key problem in this company. I have noticed it is also true on glassdoor reviews and I myself took a satisfaction survey of my co-workers before leaving (class project). The majority of them are egotistical, have no respect for underlings (especially the young), and do not accept responsibility for problems. In my experience the department manager fully relied on the over worked associate staff and would take most weekends off as well as call out when inspections would come up. Essentially the fruits of our labor he took credit for, while if any mistakes were made it wasn't his fault or he wasn't there. It also doesn't help that the Store Managers rotate around stores and every time you do get a good and understanding one they end up in another store in a week or two. The pay is so-so but honestly the pack mules of the store should get what they deserve and they seem intent on cutting hours at the expense of workers and their store. My department had been understaffed nearly the entire time I was there and yet they monitor and cut hours like that's their first duty. Also that scratch off card system for "good work" and a kind of merit system is more insulting to me than nothing. Oh thanks for breaking your back for us! Here is a scratch off that may or may not have something less than $10 dollars of value that you can use in the store.

Pros

Offers decent / relatively competitive salaries for Marketing positions. Work life balance was also decent but don’t confuse “decent” for good.

Cons

Toxic work environment rampant with microaggressions. The culture is that of a boys club made up of unambitious people who transferred up to Maryland from PA in 2018, and will likely work at Giant until retirement. The highest priority is maintaining the status quo and sweeping issues under the rug to keep up appearances. HR completely ignores reports of sexual harassment and thus enables it. I’ve worked at several other large companies and have never experienced an environment so rank. Management seems happy but all specialist level employees are taken advantage of and treated as disposable.
