Pros

- total lack of organization and accountability has some upsides if you want to overstep your responsibilities (ie nobody knows what's going on so you can more or less do what you want if you're in good standing) - execs try to be open about decision making which is nice, but the good will sometimes highlights how out of touch they are with their employees - the people are good for the most part, it's a shame the org is so dysfunctional

Cons

- org is led by academics with no industry experience. It shows. - poor leadership and broad distrust in the leadership team - cross-functional communication is non-existent - organizational leaders are wary of making the wrong decisions, so they make no decisions at all. instead, individual contributors make decisions that aren't shared out, and teams end up going in opposite directions.

Pros

When I first started at Ginkgo, it had a wonderful culture, great benefits, and unlimited PTO, fantastic people who all enjoyed working together. Pay was good, cool office in Seaport.

Cons

The pros are mostly gone now. The founders made critical and catastrophic financial decisions that buried the company and caused over 400 people to get laid off unexpectedly in 2024. The severance was a joke. The culture has changed completely. People are stressed, unsure of the future and most are looking for their next role to protect themselves. Stress is massive. No work/life balance. Doubtful the company will survive.

Pros

Dynamic & innovative work environment with some of the smartest people in the industry. Wide array of opportunities, from STEM into Commercial, IT and beyond. Really cool facilities & holds the fun, start-upy vibe but is growing into a more robust business. Great benefits (unlimited PTO, commuter benefits, affordable & high quality insurance [BCBS]). Focuses on diversity & inclusion by ensuring there is no wage gap between races & genders and providing ERGs that have executive sponsors.

Cons

Needs to move out of the start-up mentality and into a more stabilized business. Work/life balance is challenging.
