Pros

Got to use the cool laser cutter.

Cons

Company treated frontline staff poorly, laying over 26+ full time staff off (some hourly and some salary) with no notice. They didn't even have our manager talk to us first, instead sent a general email and cut access during a video call to connect with colleagues. The company didn't listen to needs of both customers or staff trying to support them and backtracked on initial expectations set upon hiring. We were hired under the expectation to never do phone support, which was added and then we were required to do for up to 8 hours/full shifts. Customers and staff didn't have many resources to support success of laser cutter use out of the box, and the marketing team even showed the laser cutter in promotional and tutorial videos in ways that it literally couldn't be used safely. We all applied to a listing that listed the job as a permeant full time role, only to find out at the last moment that it was actually "temp to hire" but the "hire" part never actually happened.

Pros

-Best people I have ever worked with. Seriously, we hire top talent -You get to work with lasers. Amazing. -We have the best customers -Glowforge will succeed as a company. It's an amazing idea and Dan is very smart at marketing it -Culture and values are pretty cool

Cons

Although we hire top talent, a lot of decisions are micromanaged. The entire org is very smart, including Dan and the senior executives, but they also tend to want to be involved in everything. This makes getting features out extremely slow and frustrating, and causes us engineers to redo a lot of work as well as ship incomplete features. After we ship, we never iterate. Been here two years, and after shipping units, I expected us to have a roadmap and direction. Instead it feels like we're just grabbing the next hottest and loudest thing. When we had a "Product overview" meeting, the first 30 minutes was filled with marketing and strategy, and we ran out of time to answer questions. We were promised a follow up, and it never happened.

Pros

+ No shortage of excitement and optimism about the product and the potential. + Smart coworkers who are working hard to make the CEO's dreams a reality. + Cool product with lots of buzz.

Cons

- Highest stress level I've ever experienced at a job. - Everyone working very long hours to meet unrealistic internal deadlines that are constantly shifted further and further back. - Communication could be a lot more transparent. - Product potential is very unproven. There is a real risk that the whole thing may end up fizzling out after initial shipments are fulfilled, or that some unforeseen support issue becomes big enough to seriously affect the bottom line. - Deceptive marketing practices that oversell the product's capabilities and gloss over its limitations. - Seems to be a pattern in those who have left the company: Very few stick around long enough to vest any stock options at the one-year cliff. How convenient for Glowforge.
