Disorganized and bound to fail.

Pros

The pay is good, they have free coffee, most of the people are great and you receive a discount on their catalog items.

Cons

Disorganized due to the mass change and empty offices all around. Benefits are 60/40 and don't cover much. Whatever the parent company says goes (Granger). My role changed twice in one year and so did my hours a few times. They are closing branches very fast leaving customers in the dark. Don't let the money tempt you. Amazon will eat them up soon enough.

Pros

New management is over-hauling the company completely. Closing down 59 branches across Canada, downsizing the entire firm. Attempting to create a sustainable organization for the employees that remain. Have axed/laid-off a lot of middle management types who were a drag on company profitability.

Cons

A poor company culture which has proven difficult to change. Still too many hangers on - 'HR manager' types, or 'director of whatever types' who have no ability to drive revenue, profitability or overall company success. The former Acklands was a very, very bloated company. CDN top-level management still consists of 'sales guys' , who have little understanding of financial metrics or the tools needed to move the firms balance sheet forward. This is not good enough to compete at the highest level with the Amazon's and Ali Babas of the world

Pros

retirement plan, benefits, the work itself can be fun

Cons

Archaic computer systems; extremely time consuming, disorganized processes that involve little sense; completely disconnected managers that either don't have a clue of what really comprises a day at A.G. or just don't care (as long as their own career is advancing); back stabbing is the norm and is widespread; they try to come off as a modern, open, and encouraging atmosphere but everyone knows that you'd better not dare speak your mind; many visitors from head office (to the branch) will walk right by you as if you don't exist or perhaps even sit down in your chair and take over your desk while you were in the washroom - of course your mgr is too scared to say anything - just make sure that you still get your 12 hours work done in this 8 hour day; the lower you are on the totem pole the worse you are treated; the branch manager could be a complete and utter incompetent moron but as long as he's a 'yes man' that's all that seems to matter, especially if he's lucky enough to have staff that carries him along. This is the worst company that I have ever worked for.
