Pros

The time I have worked at Guide Book Publishing I have learned a lot and grown. It is a medium size business with a small business feel. This is a good company to get a entry level start. They are flexible with you and your time. The people you work with our great, which will make you want to work here for a long period of time.

Cons

You will not make much money here, even when you are with the company for a long time. The only way to stay with this company for a long period of time is to have someone else in your household make a significant amount more than you. You may often times feel unappreciated, overworked, and replaceable. There are no awards or structures of appreciation for anyone other then account executives. The technology they use is outdated, which makes communication difficult between the home office and outside account executives.

Pros

Some independence, meet a variety of people, able to pursue own leads.

Cons

Where to start? Basically, this company was started 20 years ago and everything stopped there: Technology, communication, financial compensation. Everything is done by Fax or mail. You can't get direct access to voicemail. They do not have company e-mail. As an "account executive," you are working off of their version of a "draw system" which they describe in the interview as base salary. Essentially it is designed for failure for the account executive. You might be able to work a church and exceed your sales goal but you will still have to make up for "dog" church territories. It doesn't start over with each new church of sales cycle. Your draw comes out to minimum wage and you are expected to pay for own gas except for long distance to the church itself from your home and back. Many times they will book you in a motel (that is another story as they are sometimes at the level of a flop-house) that is usually 30 miles or more from the work location. For the first time in my life, I had to apply for food stamps as most of my money was going towards making sure the CEO/"landowner" was sitting pretty. DO NOT TAKE A SALES JOB WITH THIS COMPANY.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry your experience with Guide Book Publishing was not the best. We wanted to take a moment and expand on several of the comments you made. Communication at GBP is through fax, phone, mail, email, and social media sites on a frequent basis. Senior management is always available to answer any questions that account executives have and take steps to fix problems. Direct access to voicemail is provided for all account executives; starting with their training they are assigned their own individual voice mail on the company system. The information about our “draw system” is never described as a base salary, and the other information about the salary/draw systems is incorrect. We are sorry if any of those items were not explained to you properly. In terms of hotel accommodations, they are arranged by the company and are always solely made with reputable national chain companies. In many instances the hotels have been set up with a bartering arrangement by other account representatives. It is unlikely any other account representatives would sign up an inferior hotel as they may well be staying there themselves.

Pros

Nothing worth noting at this time.

Cons

You pay your own expenses and will do a lot of driving. In the first month I worked there (which consisted of only 3 weeks) I was #2 in sales for the company but yet I was unable to exceed the $300 weekly draw! During the interview process, they will state they only work with churches that have a membership of 750+ but then will turn around and send you out of town to work a church with 500 members or less! Print advertising is not very lucrative in today's market and economy. They will tell you it is acceptable to work from home some of the time, but if you do, they will claim you have abandoned your position and will remove you from payroll without notice!

We apologize about any inconveniences you may have experienced during you time at GBP due to outside circumstances. When an account representative is doing a travel assignment all their expenses are compensated for prior to them leaving. They are provided a gas allowance to and from their destination, a per diem for food, and their hotel is fully paid for. The only out of pocket expense incurred by the account representative is local mileage. Other incidental expenses, such as postal, are reimbursed by the company on a monthly basis. Account representatives are always informed of the number of households in a congregation. This is the number of books to be mailed out and the relevant number to an advertiser. The number of members is always considerably larger as typically there are multiple members per household. The comment about checks being refused by the bank was due to a fraud alert be on our account due to some fraudulent checks having gone through our bank account recently. The teller was in error when they did not cash the check for this employee. The bank has since apologized for their error. A new check was issued the next business day and the employee cashed it with no issue.
