United Healthcare is dreadful

Pros

Guidewire is a pleasure to work at. My coworkers epitomize what is best in a good healthy working environment.. Everyone that I come in contact with at Guidewire is collegial and performs their job with the utmost integrity and accountability. The non healthcare compensation is pretty good and the work life balance is also very good. I feel like I am part of a team that is accomplishing good things in the Insurance Industry and I wouldn't want to be anywhere else right now.

Cons

The one main drawback is the healthcare coverage. United Healthcare is terrible. There customer service is atrocious. I have had multiple issues with them and I have been bounced around while contacting them for multiple issues with never getting someone that has a clue. I can't say enough good things about our HR representatives who have to deal with UHC incompetence. They are on the ball, however you can only bang her head against the wall before you have ireversable brain damage.

Pros

Guidewire has been a great place to work. Before it went public, the compensation package was great, most who joined before the IPO got a pretty good deal. It's still a really nice place to work. The focus on rationality, integrity, and collegiality is really rewarding. I like feeling empowered/encouraged to help our customers succeed. It's also a rewarding industry: we do something that matters to the social fabric, insurance is a key part of encouraging the kind of risk taking that makes America great. There is room to make a difference. The company is now an entrenched player, and will be stable for decades to come.

Cons

The only real con is that pay and other comp factors are now lagging the industry. That's partly made up for by some of the fringe benefits (e.g. no death marches), but there are a growing number of places where you can get those fringe benefits _and_ a stronger pay package. Guidewire has unfortunately also taken a path of overrewarding at the top. People who have almost nothing to do with the success of the company are getting massive stock packages, while the people who build the products that make all the money get very little.

Pros

This place is pretty great. Some very bright people and talent doing lots to be on the front of a industry. Also what a training program for new hires!

Cons

They serve the insurance industry. If that is something your into AWESOME, if not you may not get excited about the mission.
