Pros

It is a stable company and the compensation is good.

Cons

The culture. A disappointment is to see how what is said to employees is not always the whole truth. For example, HR may say all associates are equally valued and that all associates are treated fairly but in reality, what applies to the larger employee body doesn't necessarily apply to the people who make the rules. It is a hierarchal culture at H&R Block. It would benefit the organization if it would not try to present itself as anything but that. Associates are told to be frugual, to cut expenses, to work more due to cutting out jobs. At the same time executives are encurring large costs by changing travel plans at the last minute, enjoying a private jet, and having expensive dinners on the corporate dime. That sends a negative message to associates.

Pros

Block seems to want to be fair with compensation and they provide pretty good health benefits. 100% coverage after copays for medical for about 300 dollars a month. The provide an employee stock purchase plan that pretty much will guarantee 10 percent return on your money. The have a decent 401k plan that matches 5 percent dollar for dollar. I have enjoyed my ability to work with new technology and not be trapped in the same old stuff year to year, but I am not sure that would be shared across the board. Generally the people are great to work with here and it is a friendly environment.

Cons

Huge company, lots of politics to deal with. There are a lot of procedures that are put in place that are unnecessary. Sometimes there are meetings to have meetings about a meeting that needs to be held at some future time. A little crazy but i guess that is to be expected at such a large company. There are some processes that are put in place that really hurt the productivity of workers. There is not enough cooperation between areas of the company, virtual walls have been built that should be torn down to achive a better cooperative environment. That is about it.
