Pros

Flexibility of hours (once you are an experienced tax preparer), part-time supplement to regular income

Cons

Initiatives coming from headquarters are often out of touch with the realities of day-to-day tax preparation. Every tax season seems more disorganized than the last as headquarters institutes poorly planned changes to procedures.

Pros

By far what's best about working for Block is their Education and Training system. You have the ability to increase your tax knowledge and designation as much and quick as you desire. They have numerous resources abailable for youy to do this. Also they do place a strong emphasis on the Client experience and make sure you do your best to satisfy them. Very honest and high sense of intergrity, always focused on doing what's right for the client and not cutting corners just get clients more of a refund and belive that's what is going to keep them coming back. Excellent support for clients who need to deal with issues with the tax authority. Wether they receive a letter from the IRS or are being audited, they can turn to H&R Block and find the assistance they need.

Cons

Probably the biggest drawback is that it's seasonal work. Unless your in upper management you cannot work all year around. Even if you get the chance to work during the summer, you have to take 2 months off. The base pay is decent, commission on entry level position is not much, but it does increase as you move up. Also depending which office you work, some managers can be great or terrible. But if you find yourself in an office where you don't like certaing individuals you always have the option to move offices.

Pros

Good seasonal job to earn some extra money and to gain tax experience if interested in accounting or for general knowledge. Friendly co-workers. $20 a year gets you unlimited continuing education classes. Great place to build tax skills!

Cons

The hourly rate isn't that great, but you do make commission that is paid in the form of a bonus check in May after the tax season is over. There is sales involved by trying to upsell various products. Hours can very greatly. The peak season (end of Jan./early Feb. and mid April) can get hectic at times.
