Pros

The work-from-home and Flex Friday programs are wonderful. There is a fitness challenge program with a provided FitBit and cash prizes. They throw fun, monthly themed parties and events. The employees/co-workers are genuinely nice people. The office layout and technology is good. Pay, benefits, and bonuses are mediocre.

Cons

They do not promote from within, and there is no career growth/development - be prepared to do the same job for 20+ years with no change. Every department is different, and the departments don't really work together much, so you could work with a group of really progressive people, or get stuck with a bunch of slow dinosaurs - like me. My department was a sinking ship - lots of turnover and financially, we were ALWAYS in the red. The leader of our department refused to make any decisions to move forward and only went after the low-hanging fruit. My boss would leave for HOURS at a time in the middle of day, and no one knew where he was. He once told me that the reason I respect deadlines so much must be because of my German heritage. I still don't know how to interpret that. He was very disruptive to workflow, rude, condescending, a terrible listener, resistant to positive change, disrespectful, sexist, defensive...I could go on, but he is the sole reason that I (and many others in my department) have left HFMA. Their performance review and goals process is so deeply flawed. EVERY YEAR, by the time my boss would finally give me my year-end performance review, it was time for my mid-year review - no exaggeration. HR also did not issue our salary raises until 4-6 months after the year-end.

Pros

worked with peers of great talent and versatility Had latitude to do what was needed- as long as we made money

Cons

Management is limited-- short sighted in many respects. Once they use you up then they throw you out...done many times with many talented people CEO is figurehead, finance runs the operation totally Few innovations now just sucking up money from members.

Inconsistent. Lots of ideas, but there's a huge failure to execute.

Pros

There are employees there that are passionate, engaged and committed to helping the associations' volunteers and supporting the mission. The facilities and technology are above average.

Cons

The culture at HFMA leaves a lot to be desired. Employees (including directors) regularly throw others under the bus when projects are not completed. This is tolerated, and, in certain cases, encouraged by the Executive Team. Instead of focusing on the strategy, people bicker about whose "job" it is to execute the idea, with little leadership from an Executive level. The process of hiring and firing is inconsistent and often times people are hired who have a very low skill set. (example: they don't know how to use PowerPoint and their job requires them to handle PowerPoint presentations regularly). This makes an inequitable situation with the Executive Team expecting some employees to work 80+ hours to cover up for the people who aren't able to do the basic functions of their job The company is also top heavy with almost half of the employees being Director or above, leaving very little room for advancement. They will choose to hire an outside person with little to no managerial experience over someone internally who has already demonstrated those skills. Compensation is inconsistent, with some people getting very overpaid, while others are very underpaid for their skill set.
