      Steady work but limited opportunities to grow.

      Pros

      Only shipyard to build aircraft carriers and one of two yards to build submarines for the Navy, so it has great job security and better than average pay.

      Cons

      Niche market and no competition (legal monopoly) thus no real incentive for continuous process improvement. The company is run like it's still the 1970s if not earlier. Micro-managed departments specialize in particular areas and little to no interaction/collaboration with other groups. Very difficult to grow beyond the limits of your department.

      Pros

      Good Health Insurance and Good Training

      Cons

      Terrible pay, Long Hours, Treat you like a child. Zero recognition unless you are in leadership. Limited PTO to spend time with family. Almost no parental leave. Its all about who you know within the yard.

      Pros

      If you are willing to put up with the hiring process they will hire pretty much anyone.

      Cons

      Continues to post 400+ million in free cash flow per quarter. Has money to maul 25k employees pay, stubs, W2s calanders, make web sites and meetings telling them how much they invest in us. Yet wages are still %14 behind inflation even at a constant high performance on my reviews have not had a raise in 3 years that even covers insurance premium increases. IT can't figure out how to do a program update without shutting the entire department down for 2 days every quarter and we are expected to use our vacation or not be paid if there is no other work.
