Pros

First, we are doing/facilitating the work of the future of healthcare. The work at Health Catalyst is so exciting. I personally can't wait to get up in the morning and make a difference each day with the clients I work with. I find the work so interesting; it is a blend of adaptive leadership, IT work in the trenches, and outcomes improvement. I have opportunities to work with data, analytics, systems, and people from various backgrounds which is enjoyable. I truly think we are transforming the healthcare system from the grassroots. I feel like I am pursuing a valuable mission and believe in the leadership team. Second, Health Catalyst benefits rock. Out of all of the places I have worked, I feel like the benefits offered here are some of the best. Healthcare prices are very low in comparison to other employers (and haven't gone up), HC contributes to team member's HSA which is helpful, and matches 401k contributions. I also enjoy the fitness benefit which allows me to purchase gym memberships for me and my family. The ability to work remotely is so awesome. I think it is also cool to offer a mentor/mentee program, I'll be taking advantage of this to grow in my skills. Also, it seems that the company is very inclusive - there are 3 affinity groups. But you don't have to be a part of the groups to feel included. Third, Health Catalyst is all about the team member experience, Dan Burton talks about this all the time, and you can really tell that he cares about the team members sincerely.

Cons

I have had different experiences on different teams within Health Catalyst. It seems that the opportunities available to go after and the team member experience depends on which team you are on and who you work with and for in the company. A good example of this is the promotion process and pay scales which are apparently standardized now but still confusing to the team members.

Thank you for your feedback and for this detailed review, and also thank you for your nearly four years of service and leadership at Health Catalyst, in the role of Senior Director of Client Engagement, a critical client-facing leadership role for the company. And thank you for your positive feedback regarding your experience at the company. I also appreciate your feedback regarding the opportunity for us to improve the robustness of our training, which we're working on, and in leveraging the power of our annual HAS summit to energize our team members -- I agree strongly with your perspective, and we're working on enabling more and more team members to participate, while also being financially responsible and staying within a reasonable expense framework. I also appreciate the reinforcing comments about all being in this together, which is one reason I'm excited for us to continue to operate with the team-based companywide bonus plan, where we're all on the same plan together. Thank you again for your many contributions to our success and the fulfillment of our mission! Best, Dan

Pros

*engaging mission *inspiring and principles-based leadership team *strong culture of humility and improvement *terrific coworkers that I enjoy associating with *great work-life balance and career opportunities

Cons

The remote team member experience has been really great for me aside from one experience: a promotion review. It's challenging to bring up the topic of personal promotions or raises in any setting; I think doing so in a remote environment makes it even more challenging due to the fact that intent in messages/emails is more susceptible to being misunderstood than in face-to-face communication. That took place during my promotion review process earlier this year. I worried that I had displayed an attitude of entitlement/greed because I had requested a promotion to a level that I felt I was at, which my immediate managers seemed to agree with but department leadership did not. I respect the decision that was made but feel that I didn't receive a clear answer for what I needed to work on in order to qualify for the level that I was hoping to be promoted to (note - I did receive a promotion, which I'm grateful for, just not the one I had originally proposed). The overall experience was stressful and uncomfortable for everyone involved. To the department leadership team's credit, they have prioritized improving the promotion review process and have made great progress there; I really appreciate them going out of their way to meet with me in person to listen to my feedback.

Thank you for this detailed and specific feedback, and for sharing a good deal about your own recent promotion experience as a remote team member. I found your experience instructive and I agree strongly with your advice and recommendations. We will be encouraging managers to utilize video more pervasively in 1:1 discussions, and are also working to provide more consistent guidance on support for relatively regular travel for remote team members to have face to face interactions with their managers, typically 1-2 times per year where possible. I also appreciate your advice regarding the importance of great communication between managers and team members in sensitive topics like promotions, and we'll work to provide training and support to enable this to more consistently occur. I also agree strongly that we should trust the field manager's recommendations, and this should be leadership's default position -- trust and support the recommendations of the managers closest to the situation. That is absolutely my default position, and we'll reinforce this recommended default position throughout the organization. Thank you again for choosing to join Health Catalyst and contribute to our company's mission and success! Best, Dan

Pros

The company: Health Catalyst is by far the best place I have ever worked. The CEO, development teams, and supporting staff are all fantastic. The core values of the company are really what drive decision making and compassion for others in the field. Its a place where everyone holds each other to their word and has an open flow collaboration network. I cannot recommend the CEO enough - they hold monthly 'Talk to the Leadership' meetings to answer questions both in and outside the company which is really refreshing to see. The development team: I worked with a tight knit group of developers on the desktop software development team. I had a wonderful experience and would highly recommend working with this company solely on experience of working in software development. They hold times for 'Innovation' which is a free thinking setting in development to see if you can better develop a feature or come up with something entirely new to help - outside of the normal sprint routine which I thought was pretty incredible. The team is very knowledge, collaborative, and understanding - they are abreast of current technologies and expand on them to meet their needs. Overall, I will miss working at this company based on the time spent on projects and the people I worked with.

Cons

Really there are none other than the internship not being longer :(
