Pros

The handful of great people who work hard and care for the residents- meaning lower level staff and housekeepers.

Cons

The upper level staff members are childish and unprofessional and DO create an environment of power struggles and negativity. The good or great managers they hire do not last more than 6 months- a year, in my experience.

Pros

Love, love, love working with the older community. They make coming to work worthwhile. Otherwise....well see comments in the Cons section.

Cons

Poor leadership make the workplace nearly unbearable. Lots of favoritism to certain staff. Front office lives in a cocoon and does not know what really goes on in the facility. Raises are given based on time served, not performance. This leads to apathetic attitudes when it comes to giving your best. Lower pay than most assisted living communities. Recognition is given to people they are trying to bribe to come to work and perform........again, not based on going above-and-beyond like they claim. One particular Director has caused several move-outs and seems to appear to treat his/her people similar to Attila the Hun. Dept. of Health called several times since he/she has been here regarding care issues. As far as the favoritism - one certain staff is allowed to run amuck and do as she pleases. Does not have to clock-in or out, parks in the Director location, eats free most everyday, comes and goes at her pleasure. Administration is so non-confrontational that no personnel issues are ever addressed....just excuses made. Marketing makes promises to potential residents that the facility cannot/will not deliver. Several unhappy families when they realize they were made unrealistic promises. Don't expect any advancement opportunities. It is sad that I've been here less than two years and have seen nearly two turnovers in all staff - ED, Directors, and non-exempt staff. I am considered a long-term employee. The worst environment I've ever worked in.

Thank you for taking the time to share your observations and feedback with us. As an organization, we believe that to provide great care to our residents, we first need a happy team. It truly saddens me that you are feeling this way. Over the past year and a half, we have created and started implementing leading edge talent acquisition and engagement initiatives that we believe will make a long-term impact on work environment and turnover you are referring to. We are very aware of the wages in the local area and continuously conduct such studies to ensure we match or are ahead of similar market rates. I would appreciate an opportunity to sit with you and further understand your concerns and ideas. My e-mail address is hsoots@thehearthllc.net. Thank you for all that you do for your team and for your residents. – Heather Soots, Regional VP of Operations

Pros

I highly respect the Hearth standard . The imprtantance of continued education in the area of alzheimers/ dementia is more apparent once i stepped away from the Hearth approximately 2 years ago. I found myself comparing ,my then employer, to the Hearth. Senior Management makes themselves available to guide and support directors and well as front line staff! The management team stays abreast of the ever changing develpoments and enthusiasically passing new techiques and information on. I really feel the Hearth does an excellent job of empowering staff with the tools to be successful. I can not over state it, but once you (anyone) sees and compares The Hearth by far it is clear that the Hearth leads with compassionate care of its residents and staff. I am truly happy to be back!! Thank you again for another opportunity to better serve our residents!

Cons

I believe the industry itself is struggleing with staffing and retaining good employees. The Hearth is no different. Staffing and promoting the whole Hearth standard is the struggle. I believe, in truly empowering the front line staff (leading by example) is a way it which we can retain and even promote ownership and purpose for the employees. If someone feels they are doing a good job and a job with purpose and gets acknowledged they will "buy into" the company standard. Giving reviews and rewarding those employee that prove themselves as deicated employees should be rewarded and acknowleged. I also believe that each building should take on a "personality" of its own, once the standards are in place. I think sometimes we compare buildings but we need to try to avoid a "cookie cutter building".
