Pros

Dealing with schools and helping educators. The intent is there but it is impossible to be successful with current management.

Cons

Really bad management. Micromanaged by non qualified Yes men. No training, no mentors. Former CEOs where interested in a culture of family. New CEO is cold brash and classless. The company has lost hundreds of agencies under her "management style". If you looking to start a career, don't look here. They call you an independent contractor and treat you as an employee. Can't wait for the class action suite.

Used to be a great place to work!

Pros

Several years ago it was a great place to work with a true willingness to help America's educators. Almost a decade ago when I first started with the company, it had a wonderful culture - full of teamwork, collaboration and a true feeling of family. On my first day with Horace Mann, I was brought up to the CEO's office so I could meet him personally. Now the current CEO won't even let any other employees use the same bathroom as her, which tells you a lot about her. She leads through fear and intimidation rather than through vision and integrity.

Cons

The CEO and Executive Leadership Team has completely changed in the past 5-6 years and it was definitely NOT for the better. The agents and employees have never been more dissatisfied or fearful of losing their jobs. Hundreds of employees both in the field and Home Office have been let go in the past few years. And many others (like myself) saw the writing on the wall and chose to leave on their own accord. Systems are outdated and so many corners are cut on new systems to save money that even the new systems are difficult to work with. Front line employees, Manager, Directors and Officers who work hard and do a good job are completely overworked and underappreciated. Agent Compensation changes so frequently that the agents can't even keep up with how they are being paid.

Pros

The training was great because of the trainers.

Cons

The training was rushed and limited. The technology of this company is antiquated. The policies and procedures are inefficient and redundant. After training, you are pretty much on the phones trying to figure out what wasn't covered in training. While you are trying to work, you get constantly bombarded by "Team Leads" if you take more than 5 minutes to complete tasks, they know can take 30-40 minutes. Micromanagement at this company, because they hire inexperienced and uneducated managers who have also been micromanaged. The workload gets more and more every day as other departments pawn their work on you. Frustrating trying to help customers, as the reason most of them call is that the company screwed something up. These people are tripping over their own feet. Hard to believe this company made it this long. They give you a lot of time off...if you can actually get to use it. I worked at Horace Mann for 4 months and it felt like 4 years. If you like to be micromanaged this is the place for you. Health Benefits are horrible for an Insurance company.
