Sales is King, everything else... Not so much

Pros

Keyence is a fantastic company to work for as a starting industrial sales position. Not so much in a long term development manner, but more as an almost paid graduate degree. Thanks to the support provided by the various operations departments somebody fresh out of school can pick up a very advanced sales skill set if they put the effort in. Over the first few years, the rewards match that idea and overall compensation is fairly decent, if not spectacular. If I had a friend who was looking for a position based around industrial sales, I would point them towards the nearest Keyence recruiter.

Cons

That being said... I would steer anyone I like away from any non-sales position with this company. There is simply no respect in the corporate culture for any employee who does not have the word "sales" in their title. In fact, Keyence is notorious for extremely high turnover of personnel that go on to get management positions in other companies. So much so, that there is an almost decade gap between even junior management and any non-management employe, people simply do not see a reason to stay more than five years here as the rewards simply do not keep pace with responsibilities. Most comparable companies will pay double the base salary for the same level of work. Recently, Keyence has wised up to this fact and deliberately lowballs base compensation and titles far out of proportion to actual responsibilities. For example, it is not unusual for somebody with a specialist or senior specialist title to be doing work that would be assigned to a junior manager at any other company. In fact, the non sales career track has no viable development options and tops out well below any professional (Senior manager, director, VP, etc) level.

Pros

Management has begun moving in the right direction in terms of giving salespeople the tools they need to be most effective while on the road. Great opportunity to earn good money for the amount of work done. Excellent launchpad for a career in sales in industrial manufacturing.

Cons

Very visible glass ceiling for anyone who does not come from the Japanese HQ. Management positions are few, and tend not to open up very frequently. The culture is inflexible in certain aspects, making it sometimes difficult to maintain a good work/life balance. The repetitive nature of the job and the metrics used to assess salespeople become numbing over time and lead to a burnout of most salespeople by the 3-5 year mark. Good news is that by that time, companies with more flexible cultures will be knocking on your door to hire you. Bonus structure levels off at a sometimes unfair level compared to the amount of sales brought in.
