Pros

Covance leads the CRO world in professionalism. It's like selling the Rolls Royce of contract research services. Management is well trained, services are quality, and the growth is invigorating. Blow out your sales numbers and you can retire earlier than you had planned.

Cons

I was always amused by the 6-Sigma initiative. Seems like a lot of work to get people to analyze and solve problems. Anyone with a science background could make most of these changes using their background. However, it does make you a more valuable employee to other companies after you've gone through the training. The downside is that it slows down needed change in process. Another downside that isn't limited to just Covance is the review process. You can be in working group of five. All five workers cannot exceed expectations. Nor can all five not meet expectations. One usually "exceeds", one usually "needs improvement", and the rest "meet expectations". Therefore, your best bet is to not let your coworkers in on your success strategies. Sounds silly, but if you get a "needs improvement", you're put on a structured program to help you. Get a "needs improvement" twice and you're probably out of a job. Then again, like most sales jobs, it's all about your relationship with your superior. If your boss doesn't like you, you'll be gone sooner or later. Covance has a structured program for letting folks go, but that can be worked a number of different ways. It just takes a few months. If your boss thinks you're golden, things will happen for you. I've seen folks with more experience get passed by folks with a better relationship with their boss many times.

Pros

The opportunities for advancement at Covance are numerous. The work schedule in my department is very flexible. I have been promoted and rewarded in recognition of the work I have put in over the years. I work in a laboratory setting and have all of the equipment and instrumentation I need to do my job effectively. I can generally purchase anything I need easily. There are many different personalities present, so finding someone that you "jive" with is not too hard. It seems that there is an increasing rate of turnover, so being promoted or taking on new responsibilities is easy to do.

Cons

Depending on the department that one works in, there is a huge discrepancy between acceptable and unacceptable work ethic. Because of the increase in turnover, the quality of the work performed varies greatly between those who are competent and those who struggle with their "duties". I cut my teeth in an environment where supervisors and management would be on the prowl for people not doing their job. The attitude at Covance is much more laid back and it is conceivable that someone could do no work in the course of a week or more, and a supervisor would have no idea.

Pros

Wonderful co-workers within the lab.

Cons

No time off when needed. Can't call in sick. No overtime pay. Can't get in touch with Management when needed. No respect from Management. No Management backing. Constant nit picking from Management. Management is basically not there for us and telling us we are a tem. We are basically on our own. They are more interested in past due patient amounts owed that "billing" should be dealing with not the individual lab sites. Bottom line they want money and don't care about their employees or the patients.
