Pros

I wish I could say something positive.

Cons

MMGY exists strictly through M&A's, and I was unfortunate enough to live through part of this ongoing, never-ending process. Many smaller agencies were swept under the wing (ahem, sold, because why not) of the "leading integrated marketing communications company focusing solely on travel, you know like Ketchum or Ogilvy..." and the fallout was incredibly unpleasant. I found myself in uncomfortable situations with management repeatedly, and as "we continued to grow as a family" and pretend nothing was beyond awful, every aspect of my job became increasingly unbearable. I was originally excited that they could offer several opportunities to everyone beyond what their initial job descriptions entailed, but they showed their true colors within the first three weeks - red flags left and right; from HR to the strange surprise gatherings they forced on us, to the public and petty fights among partners and *key* personnel. I tried to have solution oriented conversations. I tried to productively express what was or was not working for myself and my colleagues. I've never seen a management team as ignorant as this one - calling agency wide video conferences at disgusting hours of the day across their worldwide offices - only to sit around for three hours touting how amazing they are while each person in each office is exchanging side looks and texts about how depressed they are to be there (which was also visible across the video conference). If you want to feel empowered, this is not the place for you. If you want to be in a collaborative environment, not for you. If you want to grow, in any capacity - again, not for you. This company - regardless of the office or "channel" you're in - will beat you down. Leadership is incredibly inappropriate and tosses around accusations and rumors casually. They are also incredibly confrontational and then pretend as if they never were. They'll force you to watch a video on harassment, and then harass you - and the worst part is that they don't even really know they're doing it. If you're considering applying for a job within any of the brands under MMGY (MMGY, Myriad, NJF, DK whatever, whatever, whatever, whatever the next ten companies they just bought), please do your research. Ask colleagues and truly proceed with caution. In my experience, every U.S. office makes my skin crawl, and I will never do business with anyone from that management team, and a few following in their footsteps, ever again.

MMGY Global Response

Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us. It’s no surprise that we’ve experienced growing pains during our very rapid growth as we’ve continued to acquire other agencies over the past couple of years, but there should be no doubt that every location or channel within the agency is important to us. Of course, when change occurs, it causes stress and new challenges - but we’ll absolutely use your feedback to keep us focused on improving perception. Separate from the above though, we’re surprised to hear that you felt that you were harassed while here. We don’t tolerate harassment and we take those allegations seriously. We strongly encourage you to contact our SVP of Human Resources (wkubik@mmgyglobal.com) so that we can investigate and respond appropriately to any inappropriate behavior. Finally, with all due respect to our colleagues at larger agencies, we are not trying to be a comprehensive, we-can-do-anything agency. We love working with our travel, tourism and hospitality clients. -Jenn Toro, HR Partner

Terrible Experience

Pros

A lot of the senior leadership were accessible and collaboration across teams was good. My happiest times were getting to know coworkers in other divisions, brainstorming with creatives on other teams, and meeting senior leadership.

Cons

I had horrific experiences at this company. I witnessed a gay coworker hide getting engaged. I heard coworkers make racist comments. I saw a nearly all white male creative team. There was a lot of drinking during the day. Coworkers frequently reported on each other behind each other’s back. I was often urged not to share my ideas, even with clients I had long term relationships with. I am female and was punished for a male coworker’s mistake. I was also punished for not drinking, and for trying to keep meetings on track. I got strong results for my clients and some of my predecessor’s work had seemed lazy. As someone who puts a lot of work into my client relationships, accounts, and results this bothered me a lot and eventually inspired me to start my own company. Like a lot of other ad agencies I was expected to miss occasions like birthdays and anniversaries for work and I ended up getting divorced within a year of working there. I was compensated $20k less than my previous and current employers. It’s been a few years since I worked there but unless things have changed I would strongly not recommend.

Pros

Very talented and smart alumni group (most made up the former agency Ypartnership and YPB&R) who are long gone. The people who are still there after all the massive firings, layoffs and resignations are still very nice. On a positive note, there are lots of empty offices to choose from for new employees.

Cons

Since the agency was bought out by the Kansas City group, most of the smart, talented senior and junior people are gone. Most of the clients have left. The agency is literally 20% of its previous size. The PR Department which was the best in the travel industry has been dismantled. The media is a skeleton of its past. All the digital people are gone. 90% of the senior advertising account managers, creative teams and media managers have been fired. The new managers who were brought in are all lightweights who they could hire cheap, The work stinks. The new culture stinks. The pay stinks. The morale stinks.
